Created by Paul William Davies, the series is set amidst the Whitehouse and focuses on a quirky detective, Cordelia Cupp (Aduba), who must solve a murder that has happened during a state dinner at the premises of the Whitehouse. Created by Nichelle Tramble Spellman, the show is about a true-crime podcaster, Poppy Parnell (Spencer), who revisits an old case that made her famous. After she gets to know of some recent developments in the case, which revolves around the murder of a Stanford professor, she decides to look at the case again and find out if the suspect she helped get caught, Warren Cave (Aaron Paul), is the person responsible for the crime. The show is complex, thrilling, and suspenseful. Like The Residence, it involves a murder and a keen investigator, who wants to get down to the bottom of the truth. The show has a more serious tone and focuses on aspects like fame, relationships, and psychology.


2. Bodies

Based on a graphic novel by Si Spencer and starring Stephen Graham, Greta Scacchi, Shira Haas, and others, Bodies, is a British sci-fi murder mystery thriller created by Paul Tomalin. The series revolves around four timelines—1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053. All four eras are united by the fact that a mysterious dead body appears in Longharvest Lane in the Whitechapel area of London in the same spot across the four eras. Four detectives from the Metropolitan Police detectives begin an investigation and uncover a sinister conspiracy with far-reaching consequences. Unlike The Residence, the show has a more complex plot and is more serious. However, both shows are ultimately a murder mystery thriller and focus on a detective trying to solve a murder. The British series received positive reviews for its plot and performances and depicts multi-layered characters. Viewers who loved The Residence should give this show a try as it has a more comprehensive mystery.


3. A Murder at the End of the World

Starring Emma Corrin, Harris Dickinson, Alice Braga, and others, A Murder at the End of the World is a psychological mystery thriller miniseries. Created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the show revolves around an amateur detective, Darby Hart (Corrin), who, along with others, is invited by a billionaire to a retreat in the isolated Arctic area in Iceland. However, when one of them dies mysteriously, Darby becomes obsessed with solving the murder and making sure that she runs against time and stops the killer from striking again. The show has all the elements of a murder mystery thriller and is set against the cold backdrop of the Arctic, the series is full of suspense and twists and turns. The show received positive reviews for its direction and tone and compared to The Residence, the show has a much darker and sinister tone. Even though Darby has a similar personality as Cupp, the stakes are much higher in the show and all the characters are layered and complex.


4. The Perfect Couple

Directed by Susanne Bier and based on a novel by Elin Hilderbrand, The Perfect Couple, is a mystery drama miniseries, with an ensemble cast of Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Jack Reynor, and others. The show has luxurious settings and backdrops as it is set around a wedding in Nantucket, which goes haywire after a murder takes place. With everyone at the wedding party becoming a suspect, the show delves into complex drama and family dynamics as hidden secrets come to the fore. Like The Residence, the show has a similar premise where a group of rich people congregate although the event ends in a ghastly murder. The Residence has moments of humor but The Perfect Couple adopts a more serious tone. Both shows focus on the past of each of the suspects and they are interviewed individually to recall their events. In both shows, the suspects have hidden secrets and wear a figurative mask to hide their true intentions.


5. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Based on a novel by Holly Jackson, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, is a British mystery thriller series starring Emma Myers, Asha Banks, Henry Ashton, and others. The show is about a high-school student, Pip Fitz-Amobi (Myers), who is obsessed with the disappearance and murder of a local schoolgirl. She believes that the investigation was shoddy and decides to investigate the case on her own as part of a school project. Like The Residence, the series revolves around a murder and focuses on the protagonist, who is supposed to solve it despite all the challenges. Pip Fitz-Amobi is a determined and amateur detective, who could very well be the younger version of Cupp. The show has a fresh touch to it as it focuses on an all-teenage cast and is set around a high school. Both shows have a murder mystery angle to them and are excellent whodunits to watch.


6. Presumed Innocent

Created by David E. Kelley and based on a novel by Scott Turow, which was also adapted into a movie starring Harrison Ford, Presumed Innocent, is a legal thriller and murder mystery drama, that features Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and others. The show is about a prosecutor, Rusty Sabich (Jake), who is caught amidst a murder case, when a colleague and ex-girlfriend of his, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), is killed brutally. The show has many complex layers and hidden secrets as Rusty’s illicit relationship with Carolyn comes to the fore and makes him a prime suspect. Like The Residence, the show is about murder, has plenty of mystery, and focuses on the complicated lives of the characters who are also the suspects. The series has a more legal aspect to it and has plenty of courtroom drama. Both shows are excellent whodunits.


7. The Afterparty

Starring Tiffany Haddish, Zoe Chao, and others, The Afterparty is a comedy murder mystery anthology series created by Christopher Miller. Each season has a different setting and plot. In the first season, a high school reunion ends on a tragic note as a murder occurs. All the guests become suspects and hidden secrets and jealousies come to the fore. While in the second season, the show takes place amidst the backdrop of a wedding where a murder has again occurred. The show uses the murder to explore the characters in the show and their aspirations and trauma. Therefore, the show offers complex character studies even though it has humor. Like The Residence, the show is about a murder and how the various suspects cannot leave before they tell their side of the story. Both shows are fun and Tiffany’s character Detective Danner, shares similarities in nature with Cupp. Both are quirky, have a keen sense of observation, and use unconventional methods.


8. Based on a True Story

Created by Craig Rosenberg and starring Kaley Cuoco, Tom Bateman, Natalia Dyer, and others, Based on a True Story is a dark comedy thriller show. The series revolves around Ava Bartlett (Cuoco), who is a real estate agent but loves true crime. She spends all her time listening to podcasts and trying to figure out who the killer is. However, when she encounters a real-life serial killer in her midst, who is also a person whom she knows, she and her husband, Nathan (Chris Messina), decide to offer him a deal. Instead of reporting him, they request him to do an anonymous true-crime podcast with them to discuss his motivations and psychology and stop the killing. However, things soon turn upside down and chaos ensued. The series has received positive reviews for its performances, plot, and humor. Like The Residence, the show revolves around the solving of murders. Both shows have elements of humor and Based on a True Story brings out the hilarity in even the most bizarre and dramatic situations.


9. Only Murders in the Building

Starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, Only Murders in the Building is a mystery comedy-drama created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. The show focuses on three quirky people, played by Martin, Short, and Gomez, with a shared obsession with true crime podcasts. The three also live in the same upscale building in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. When a murder occurs in the building, the three join forces to solve the murder and create a podcast to tell their viewers about their progress. The show is a critical and commercial hit and was appreciated for its performances, chemistry, humor, and plot. The show has been nominated multiple times at the Emmys and like The Residence, the show is a murder mystery drama with a touch of humor. Both shows are lighthearted yet full of suspense and thrills and are therefore the perfect watch.


10. Stay Close

Directed by Daniel O’Hara and starring Cush Jumbo, James Nesbitt, and others, Stay Close, is a British mystery drama series, based on a novel by Harlan Coben. The show focuses on the interconnected lives of a group of people, who are brought together due to a murder. When a young man, Carlton, disappears exactly 17 years after the disappearance of another man, Stewart, a homicide detective, Michael (Nesbitt), decides to take up the case of Carlton as he is unable to solve the case of Stewart. His investigation opens up a whole new plot as a suburban mom, Megan (Jumbo), and a photojournalist Ray (Richard Armitage), whose girlfriend has also disappeared, find themselves lined to the murder. The show has a darker tone than The Residence but both shows revolve around murder, mystery, and relationships, and have plenty of thrills.
