American Horror Story has time and again lived up to its name and provided some of the most horrifying moments. Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the anthology horror show premiered in October 2011.
Popular Hollywood stars like Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, and also Lady Gaga have appeared in the show multiple times. The show has tried everything to scare its audience, from aliens, and psychotic serial killers, to triggering phobias.
In this article, we will take a look at 10 such scariest moments in the American Horror Story.

1) Troy performs a c-section surgery on Cal
In American Horror Story: Double Feature Part 2, Troy Lord ( Isaac Cole Powell) and Cal Cambon ( Nico Greetham) are impregnated by some extraterrestrial technology when they go on a trip to the desert with two more of their friends, Kendal Carr ( Kaia Gerber) and Jamie Howard ( Rachel Hilson).
Other than Troy’s C-section and the death of his baby, the scariest moment arrives when Troy performs an amateur C-section on Cal and the baby has the face of a human but a body like an octopus. She then attacks Cal by latching on his face and starts eating him and ends up killing both Cal and Troy.
2) Adeline’s death
In American Horror Story: Delicate, Annabelle Dexter-Jones’ character Adeline denounces her coven Delicate due to their evil activities. When she gets pregnant, the cult starts to stalk her and when they get a chance, they tie her up and cut her stomach open.
Then, in a most horrific and grim scene, they bathe in the fetal blood and burn her alive to avoid getting caught.
3) Penny’s transformation
In American Horror Story: Freak Show, when Penny decides to leave her home and move in with Paul, her strict father disapproves. However, she stands up to her decision to leave.
Her father then hires a tattoo artist and disfigures her face and tongue and later disowns her. Although it is a scary scene, it is also heartbreaking to see Penny go through all this because of her father and not some outsider.
4) Violet Harmon discovers her own dead body
In the first season of AHS: Murder House, Taissa Farmiga's Violet Harmon attempts to commit su*cide by overdosing on pills. The viewers and Violet herself think that Evan Peters’ Tate was successful in saving her.
However, the audience and Violet later find out that she is a ghost and Tate has hidden her body in her own house.
5) Twisty kills Bonnie Lipton’s boyfriend in front of her
Twisty the Clown is one of the most scary characters in American Horror Story: Freak Show.
Twisty appears in the lakeside where Bonnie is enjoying a picnic with her boyfriend. While showing some tricks, Twisty grabs Bonnie’s boyfriend and kills him by repeatedly stabbing him with shears, in front of her.
He later captures and imprisons Bonnie in his campground.
6) Lana Winter’s conversion therapy
In American Horror Story: Asylum, Sarah Paulson's Lana Winters is admitted to Briarcliff Asylum as a patient after Sister Jude finds out she is a journalist and comes to Briarcliff to get a story about Bloody Face.
Jessica Lange’s Sister Jude admits her to the asylum and inflicts her with various kinds of torture to treat her of her homosexuality.
The psychological horror scenes are scary and heartbreaking to watch.
7) Audrey and Monet are forced to eat human flesh
In American Horror Story: Roanoke, the Polk family captures Audrey ( Sarah Paulson), Monet( Angela Basset), and Lee ( Adina Porter).
Porter’s Lee is tortured by Mama Polk and Jether. Later, Monet and Audrey are forced to eat the meat that the family cut from Lee’s leg while torturing her.
The scene is one of the most grotesque and scariest in Roanoke.
8) Sophie and Milo’s death
American Horror Story: Roanoke has many scary scenes and jump scares. One of them being Taissa Farmiga’s Sophie Green and Jon Bass’s Milo’s death.
Sophie and Milo are captured by the Roanoke community. While they were pleading for their lives, the community speared them on stakes and burned them alive. All of the events are recorded on Sophie’s iCloud and their bodies are found by the police the next day, charred and still spiked up.
9) Shelly is left in the playground
In one of the most horrific moments in American Horror Story: Asylum, Chloe Sevigny’s Shelly is captured by Dr. Arthur Arden when she tries to escape the asylum. He then takes her to his lab and tries to force himself on her. Shelly laughs and mocks him, which angers Arden.
He later knocks her out and amputates both of her legs. Lily Rabe’s Sister Mary Eunice then carries and drops her in an alleyway near an elementary school playground. The kids and their teacher later see her and are horrified.
10) R.J’s death
In American Horror Story: Cult, one of the most brutal and scary murders takes place. R.J., played by James Morosini, a cameraman who worked with Adina Porter’s Beverly Hope, is deemed the weakest link in the group.
Evan Peterson’s Kai Anderson and Porter’s Beverly kidnap R.J. and tie him to a chair. Kai then orders his group to take a chance and fire a nail into R.J.’s head with a nail gun. All the members, some hesitatingly and some willingly, fire a nail until R.J. is motionless. At last, Kai finishes the job and kills R.J.
