Based on a Naver webtoon, Weak Hero Class 1 is a South Korean series directed by Yoo Soo-min and Park Dan-hee and written by Yoo Soo-min and Kim Jin-seok. The show stars Park Ji-hoon, Choi Hyun-wook, and Hong Kyung. The coming-of-age thriller is action-packed and focuses on Yeon Si-eun, played by Park Ji-hoon, who is a studious student at a high school. However, he is the victim of intense bullying and decides to not back down in front of his bullies. The show focuses on themes like adolescent violence and bullying in high schools. The show is about Kim Ji-yong, played by Nam Joo-hyuk, who is a student in the police academy in South Korea. He is the titular character of the show, and he turns into a vigilante at night. He turns into a vigilante because he wants to punish those people who get away with their crimes and those who either receive light sentences from the law, even when they have committed grave crimes. Kim’s actions, however, catch the attention of Jo Heon, played by Yoo Ji-tae, who is the head of an investigation team. He therefore begins to conduct an investigation to catch the famed vigilante with the help of Choi Mi-ryeo, who is a news reporter trying to cover the vigilante’s actions herself. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show has plenty of action and thrilling moments.


2. Revenge of Others

Directed by Kim Yoo-jin and written by Lee Hee-myung, this South Korean series stars Shin Ye-eun and Lomon. The show revolves around a shooting champion, Ok Chan-mi, played by Shin Ye-eun, who is the twin sister of Ok Cahn-kyu, who has committed suicide. However, Chan-mi does not believe that her brother could kill himself. While the police do nothing to find the cause of her brother’s death, Chan-mi decides to shift to her brother’s school and get revenge as she believes that someone from the school is responsible for his death. While in school, she teams up with Ji Soo-heon, who has his own traumas and difficulties in life. Together, the two decide to take on those who bully them and get revenge on all those who are the perpetrators. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show is set against a backdrop of a high school and has similar themes of adolescent violence and the dark side of teenagerhood. Both shows are action-packed.


3. My Name

Starring Han So-hee, Park Hee-soon, and Ahn Bo-hyun, this South Korean action crime thriller is directed by Kim Jin-min and is written by Kim Ba-da. The show is about a woman, Yoon Ji-woo, played by Han So-hee, whose father dies suddenly. She then decides to join a drug crime gang, run by Choi Mu-jin, played by Park Hee-soon, and find out the killer of her father. The series is full of action, suspense, and thrills as Ji-woo soon joins the police force and becomes a mole for the gang. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the series is intense and will enthrall the viewers with its strong plot and meticulous action scenes. Even though the premise and setting are different, both shows have a similar theme of revenge and fighting against the perpetrators.


4. Pyramid Game

Created by Lee Jae-kyoo and based on a Naver webtoon of the same name, this South Korean psychological thriller series is also a survival and mystery show. Written by Choi Soo-I and directed by Park So-yeon, the show features Kim Ji-yeon, Shin Seul-ki, and others. The series is based in an all-girls high school where students engage in popularity polls to judge their rank in class. Those students who score lower on the test become victims of bullying and school violence. Amidst this setting, a transfer student, Seong Soo-ji, played by Kim Ji-yeon, comes at the bottom of the class and is subjected to bullying and violence. She therefore tries to climb the social ladder so that she can rank higher on the Pyramid Game. The show is similar to Weak Hero Class 1, as both shows focus on the dark side of adolescence and have similar themes of bullying and school violence being targeted towards a certain set of students. Both shows are gripping and full of thrills.


5. Class of Lies

Directed by Sung Yong-il and Park Ji-hyun and starring Yoon Kyun-sang, Keum Sae-rok, and Choi Yu-hwa, this South Korean series is created by Studio Dragon. The thriller series is about Jeong Soo-ah, who is a model and a popular student at the Chuunmyung High School. However, she is stabbed and left to die. When her classmate Kim Han-soo is seen with a bloody knife, a prestigious and ace lawyer, Gi Moo-hyeok, played by Yoon Kyun-sang, is brought in to defend her. However, he arrives at the school under the guise of a substitute teacher and changes his name to Gi Kang-jae. He comes over at the school to teach law, politics, and German and studies the violent atmosphere of the school. His character is enigmatic as he only cares about money and is proud of being an ace lawyer. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show is set around a high school and addresses themes of bullying and violence. The shows have plenty of action and suspense.


6. The King of Pigs

Based on an animated movie by Yeon Sang-ho, this South Korean series is written by Tak Jae-young and directed by Kim Dae-jin. The show stars Kim Dong-wook, Kim Sung-kyu, and others. The show revolves around the character of Hwang Gyeong-min, who is a serial killer and was brutally bullied at his high school. The series focuses on Jung Jun-seok and Kang Jin-ah, who are detectives. The former tracks messages about serial murders from a friend, and the latter is also a detective who has strong principles and tries to solve all the cases. Jin-ah and Jong-seok band together to try and find Hwang’s targets as he goes on with his murder spree. All three of them, however, are interconnected by a dark past and hidden secrets. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show has themes of bullying and the effect it can have on people. These series are raw and gritty and have plenty of action and suspense.

Starring Kim Dong-hee, Park Ju-hyun, and others, this South Korean series is directed by Kim Jin-min and is written by Jin Han-sae. The show is a coming-of-age thriller series that revolves around a teenager who ends up getting into some dangerous business at his high school to pay his tuition fee and tries to keep it a secret from others. However, things start turning murkier when his friends and classmates from the school try to get involved and know his secret. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show is set amidst a high school and focuses on the inner lives of the students. Both shows are intense and gripping. They highlight the complex and intertwined lives of the students and how teenagers have a dark side to themselves. Both shows have similar themes of bullying, school life, and hidden secrets.


8. Boyhood

Written by Kim Jae-hwan and developed by Kim Seong-han, this South Korean coming-of-age series is directed by Lee Myung-woo and stars Im Si-wan, Lee Sun-bin, Kang Hye-won, and others. The show is set in the 1980s South Korea and focuses on Jang Byung Tae, played by Im Si-wan, who is a weak boy living in Onyang in the South Chungcheong Province. Jang faces marginalization as he is at the bottom of the school’s social ladder. He therefore transfers to the neighboring Buyeo Agricultural High School. However, once at the school, he faces an unexpected incident that turns around his life. Apart from Jang, the show also focuses on other students at the agricultural high school. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show has a similar premise where a timid student is bullied and decides to fight back against the oppression. It is thrilling and full of action and mystery.


9. Save Me

Directed by Kim Sung-soo and written by Jung Shin-kyoo, this South Korean series stars Ok Taec-yeon, Seo Yea-ji, Woo Do-hwan, and others. Developed by Studio Dragon, the show is about Im Sang-mi, played by Seo-Yea-ji, and her family, who move from Seoul to the suburbs in Muji County as her father’s business fails. However, the family becomes the target of a cult called Goseonwon, which looks like a peaceful church but has dark secrets and violence underneath. On the other hand, Im’s twin brother, Sang-jin, is limp and is brutally bullied and assaulted at school. This leads to his suicide, which tears the family apart and makes Im decide that she will take the cult apart and get revenge. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show has themes of bullying in high schools. But the show has a much darker tone and has sensitive issues and themes, which make it a graphic and raw watch.


10. School 2017

Written by Jung Chan-mi and Kim Seung-won and directed by Park Jin-suk and Song Min-yeob, this South Korean series is a coming-of-age teen comedy and romance. Starring Kim Jung-hyun, Jang Dong-yoon, and others, the show is about a group of students at a high school, where each of them has their own aspirations and challenges. The show revolves around Ra Eun-ho, played by Kim Se-jeong, who is a bubbly girl and wants to be a webtoon artist but whose future is in jeopardy, as she is accused of being the mysterious Student X, who is a troublemaker at the school. The show also focuses on Hyun Tae-woon, who is the son of the director of the school and has his own hidden secrets. Like Weak Hero Class 1, the show revolves around a high school and mischievous students. However, the show has a much lighter tone. It has themes on how exam grades cause stress among students and the pressures of being a teenager in a high-pressure system.
