Netflix’s Dark came out in December 2017 and quickly became a global hit. Set in a German town, Winden, the show follows Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) as he unravels new mysteries about his town.

It involved several sci-fi elements, from time travel to the existence of parallel worlds. The show is renowned for introducing new twists and turns in the storyline, which kept the audience guessing until the end.

10) Michael Kahnwald is Mikkel Nielsen in Dark

In Season 1, episode 5 of Dark, the first twist of the series is revealed. When Jonas reads the letter from his father, Michael Kahnwald, he learns that his father is Mikkel, the kid who got lost in the forest on November 4, 2019.


9) Jonas takes Mikkel to the cave

In Season 2 of Dark, when Jonas meets his father to talk him out of committing suicide, he asks him who showed him the passage through the cave. Michael reveals that Jonas was the one who took him to the cave.

However, Jonas was not able to recall any of it.


8) Death of Egon Tiedamann

In Season 2 episode 7 of Dark, Claudia’s father, Egon Tiedemann, gets suspicious of his daughter’s involvement in the strange occurrences in their town of Winden. As he confronts her and the father-daughter duo get into a heated argument, Egon slips and gets severely injured.

However, Claudia doesn’t do anything to help him and lets him die, letting the future events unfold as they are supposed to.


7) Jonas unintentionally convinces Michael to commit s*icide

In Episode 6 of Season 2, Jonas goes back in time to talk his father out of committing s*icide. However, as Jonas shows his father the letter he had written for him before committing suicide, he gets convinced that he has to die for his son Jonas to live.


6) Jonas is the Stranger

Another important twist that was revealed in Season 1 of Dark was the stranger’s identity. As he kidnaps Jonas and locks him up in the bunker, he reveals his true identity to him, that he is Jonas Kahnwald from the future.

Jonas pleads with him to get him out of the bunker, but the stranger tells him that everything will happen as it is supposed to happen.


5) Elisabeth is Charlotte’s mother

In Season 2 of Dark, it is revealed that the baby Elisabeth was holding in the Polaroid pictures with Noah was Charlotte. This is one of the most mind-bending twists of the series because this twist makes Charlotte Elisabeth’s daughter and mother.

Adam reveals this information to Noah right before he gets him killed.


4) As Jonas deals with the death of Martha, another Martha appears

In the finale of Season 2, Adam kills Martha in front of Jonas and tells him that Martha’s death is necessary for Jonas to become Adam in the future.

However, as he deals with Martha’s death, another Martha appears in front of him. With the appearance of a new Martha, the show introduces the viewers to the existence of another world.


3) Adam is Jonas

In Season 2, episode 4 of Dark, Adam, the leader of Sic Mundus, reveals to Jonas that he is also Jonas from the future. He shows the scar on his neck that Jonas has.

It is one of the most shocking twists introduced in the show because both Jonas’s motives are different. The young Jonas wants to end the cycle, but Adam wants it to continue.


2) Existence of the Origin World

In the finale episode of the series Dark, Claudia reveals to Adam that there’s a third world that exists, and that is the Origin world.

H. G. Tannhaus, the clockmaker in the series, loses his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter in a car accident. To bring them back, he creates a time machine. By operating the time machine, he creates the two parallel worlds.


1) Martha and Jonas do not exist in the Origin World

The most devastating twist introduced in the thriller series Dark is that Jonas and Martha do not exist in the Origin World.

In the final moments of the series, as Martha and Jonas save Tannhaus’ family from the accident, both of the other worlds cease to exist. In the end, it is revealed that when the two alternate worlds were created, a young Martha and Jonas saw each other through the time stream, making their end literally their beginning.

The scene finally explains to the audience why both characters were drawn to each other.
