Mary Cooper, played by Zoe Perry, is a character in the show Young Sheldon and is the mother of Sheldon. The show, which is a prequel and a spin-off of The Big Bang Theory, is about the adventures Sheldon and his family get into during his adolescent years. Mary is an interesting character in the show, as she is seen to be overly religious, and therefore, everyone thinks she is boring. 1. When Mary made a special trophy for Missy

In season 3, episode 17, Mary Cooper surprises Missy by making a unique trophy for her, as she wins the baseball tournament. She comes over to Missy’s room and proudly displays the trophy she created by using the head of a Barbie doll and placing it on the trophy to make it unique. However, Missy is embarrassed by her mother’s efforts at making the doll and insists that she could have had a Barbie instead. When Mary says that she modified the trophy so that Missy has a different trophy than the others, Missy says that she wants the regular trophy. Mary is dejected, and as she is about to leave Missy’s room, Missy notices that her mother is heartbroken and acknowledges her effort and thought. This leaves a smile on Mary’s face and is one of the few moments when the mother and daughter bond over.
2. When Mary decided to watch an R-rated movie

Mary Cooper is known for being a God-fearing lady and loves to stay away from all kinds of adult content, as it interferes with her Christian beliefs. However, in season 4, episode 2, Georgie brings home a DVD of Roadhouse, which is an R-rated movie and has graphic and sexual content. While Mary is angry that Georgie got the DVD in the house, in his absence, she is hilariously seen enjoying the mature movie. When Georgie catches her watching, she tries to feign ignorance and tries to divert the topic by asking Georgie why he is not at work. Georgie presses for answers, and Mary responds that the movie was just on. Georgie knows she is lying as she knows the characters’ names. The scene is hilarious and reveals Mary’s naughty side, which is rarely seen.
3. When Mary had a sweet moment with Sheldon

In season 2, episode 3, Mary is saddened by the news of a girl who was abused in her own home. This incident shakes her belief in God, and even though Sheldon is pretty self-centered, he always has a soft corner for his mother and notices the distress that she is in. During a particularly touching scene between the mother and son, Mary is sitting outside on the porch and comments that she is unable to reconcile her faith with God. Surprisingly, even though Sheldon is an atheist, he tries to pacify her by renewing her faith in God through a wonderful scientific analogy. He goes on to mention that out of all the people in the world, he found a perfect mother, and that is definitely the work of a creator. Mary is deeply touched by her son’s emotions and delivers a powerful performance.
4. When Mary visited Sheldon’s college

In season 4, episode 6, Mary decides to accompany Sheldon on his orientation day at East Texas College, as he is still a young child, and she wants to ensure her son is safe. However, Sheldon is embarrassed by the thought of being with his mother in college when no one else will have their parents. While Sheldon attends his classes, Mary decides to stay over on the college campus just to make sure Sheldon is fine till they must go back home. One of Sheldon’s classmates sees Mary and offers to give her a tour of the campus. She even makes her wear a college sweatshirt. Hilariously, a student thinks that Mary is also a college student, and Mary is delighted to hear that she is still considered young. Mary decides to have a fun time and joins the college kids for a backyard party.
5. When Mary supported her husband

In season 5, episode 13, George Cooper is distressed by problems at his workplace and the possibility of a resignation. He tries to keep it all to himself and gets irritated at home over small things. He and Mary bicker over bringing Sheldon home from college. Sheldon, on the other hand, decides to stay over at college for a game night with friends, and George agrees. While George tries to tell Mary that Sheldon will be safe if he stays over for a night with his friends, Mary is hell-bent on getting him home. Finally, when Mary realizes that George is upset over something, she asks him to tell the real reason, and George confides that he might lose his job. Mary immediately decides to stay by her husband’s side and hugs him, showcasing a warm and tender moment between the two.
6. When Mary realized that Missy was being neglected

Mary Cooper gets a bad reputation for ignoring Missy in favor of Sheldon and always coddling him. But in season 2, episode 5, Mary finally shows Missy the attention she deserves. When Sheldon and Missy head out for a test on the various types of intelligence quotients, Sheldon is able to score high in terms of analytical intelligence. However, he falters on other parameters like social intelligence. In this regard, Missy gives a brilliant performance. When the scientist asks her how she is so perceptive, she mentions that her parents either fuss over her elder brother or Sheldon, and she is never included. She has, therefore, learned to find out things for herself. Mary feels guilty overhearing this, and on their way back home, she decides to ask Missy where they should go for a treat instead of asking Sheldon. Proving that she wants her daughter to be included more.
7. When Mary stood by George

In season 7, episode 12, the Coopers are happy that George Cooper has received a great offer to shift to Houston and coach the Rice University football team. Even though George is apprehensive about taking the job and moving his family to a new city, Mary stands beside him and supports his decision. Even mentioning that he deserves this. Mary Cooper, therefore, shows herself to be an understanding wife. When at the dinner table, Sheldon throws a tantrum about missing his bedroom and routine at Medford if they shift to Houston, and not being accepting of change, he stomps off from the dining table in anger. Mary decides to control his tantrum and mentions in strict words that he will support his father’s and the family’s decision to move to a new city and will also get back to the dinner table. Sheldon immediately listens to her, and George admires the support he gets from Mary.
8. When Mary had a connection with Pastor Rob

Throughout season 5, Mary shares a potential spark with Pastor Rob, who has recently moved to the city to teach the kids at Sunday school. The two of them initially bond over as friends but soon realize that the two of them have a connection between them. The entire track with Pastor Rob is an interesting addition to Mary’s otherwise rigid personality. Mary realizes that someone is finally seeing her and feels that she has someone she can confide in. In season 5, episode 11, the two of them participate in a youth lock-in at Church, and Mary smokes for the first time with Pastor Rob, which is a memorable scene. George sees this and is annoyed at the out-of-character manner in which Mary is behaving with Pastor Rob. But the scene is special, as her equation with Pastor Rob is an interesting addition to her personality and adds layers to Mary Cooper and her persona.
9. When Mary hangs out with her friend and mother

In season 4, episode 15, Mary decides to let herself a little loose and joins her mother and her friend and neighbor, Brenda, for a little girl’s night out trip. The girls' trip happens because Mary and her mother want to cheer up Brenda after her husband leaves her. Surprisingly, Mary is the one who comes up with the idea of a fun night and everyone around her is surprised as Mary is known for her religious and uptight personality. When her mother suggests they go to the bar for drinks, Mary hesitates but agrees to the plan. The three of them have a great time, and it is one of the few moments in which Mary’s unserious side is seen. Mary even has a few beers at this night out, which makes for a memorable scene.
10. When Mary reacted to the news of George’s passing

In season 7, episode 12, the Coopers are getting ready to have a family picture before they leave the town. Everyone is happy, as they are looking forward to new beginnings, and George promised he will come back early. However, as the time to click the photo comes near, everyone is desperately waiting for George to come back, but he has not come back yet. Finally, they get a knock upon their door, and George’s friends reveal to Mary and her mother that he suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. The scene is sudden and, therefore, shocking, and Mary gives a brilliant performance as she expresses grief through her eyes. Her heartache and sadness are visible, but she tries to keep herself calm as she tries to let the news sink in. While the children and her mother are devastated, Mary Cooper delivers a strong and poised performance.
