Young Sheldon follows the growing up years of Sheldon and the adventures he and his family get into, one important character in the show is George Cooper, who is Sheldon’s father and is played by Lance Barber. Even though he is shown to be obsessed with drinking and baseball, he turns out to be a loving father to his children and a supportive husband to his wife. In season 4, episode 2 of Young Sheldon, Missy and George are heading out for a baseball match, when Missy’s periods start. Set during the early 90s, when fathers used to stay away from the adolescent issues of their daughters, it is commendable how George handled the situation. Even though he feels awkward, he goes inside the convenience store and buys sanitary pads for his young daughter. This proves that he is always willing to step up as a father.


2) That time George took Missy out for a dinner date

In season 1, episode 21 of Young Sheldon, George realizes that Missy feels overlooked due to Sheldon’s tantrums. He makes a sweet effort to take his young daughter for some father-and-daughter bonding time. Missy requests to have dinner at the Red Lobster and dresses up in her best attire to accompany her father. When she fears the lobster, Georgie lovingly dissects it for her and the two prove that the little things can contribute to a healthy parent-child relationship.

When NASA does not entertain his requests, George takes it upon himself to drive Sheldon to the center along with Georgie. However, pouring rain dampens their trip and they are unable to attend the launch. Sensing that Sheldon is dejected, George tries to divert him by asking mindless questions. Missy is immediately scared, but George handles the situation calmly and covers his daughter with his body to weather the storm. But Sheldon gets nervous before flying and George takes up the mantle of allying his fears. As a responsible father, he gives Sheldon the example of Star Trek and helps relieve his son’s fears. This incident shows that George was an important part of Sheldon’s growing-up years.

In season 5, episode 19 of Young Sheldon, Georgie comes to know that Mandy is pregnant. However, he is unsure of how to tell this news to his parents. While Mary creates a ruckus and forces Georgie to marry Mandy, George calmly handles the situation, tries to support his son even though he is angry, and tells Mary that Georgie does not need to marry Mandy at his young age.

In season 2, episode 19 of Young Sheldon, Sheldon has to give a speech in front of the assembly and is afraid. George proves that even though he is simple by nature, he knows how to solve his kids’ problems and tells Sheldon that even he got scared when he first began coaching and had to talk to the team. He makes Sheldon realize that most of the people are not even listening and Sheldon is a genius and must give himself credit.

In season 2, episode 20 of Young Sheldon, Veronica stays over at Cooper’s residence and does not want to go back to her mother and her abusive stepfather. However, when her step-father comes up at Cooper’s door and demands Veronica to come back home and even talks disrespectfully to Georgie, George comes from inside and stands up for his son and Veronica and calmly but authoritatively proves that he always stands for what is right.
