The former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is set to receive the Chairman's Award at the NAACP Image Awards. Harris will receive the award meant to honor public individuals who have "excelled in public service and leveraged their unique platforms to ignite and drive meaningful change." The event will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif., and will air live on CBS and BET at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The show is scheduled to last for two and a half hours, thirty minutes longer than the previous shows.

This will be Kamala Harris' first major appearance since she stepped down from office on January 20, 2025. Let's learn more about the award below.

The Chairman's Award is usually given to individuals who managed to excel in public service and have brought about a meaningful change to the society using their unique platforms. People who have been honored with the Chairman's Award include Samuel L. Jackson, Amanda Gorman, then Sen. Barrack Obama, Tyler Perry, Ruby Dee, John Lewis, Danny Glover, and Rev. James Lawson, amongst others.This year, Kamala will be presented the award at the 56th NAACP Image Awards.

Kamala Harris was the first woman and person of color to become the vice president of the United States. She made history by becoming the first Black and South Asian woman nominated by a major party for president. Before holding the vice president's office, Kamala Harris served as a U.S. senator and California's attorney general.

Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP's national board of directors, described Kamila in a statement he made on Monday.

"Vice President Kamala Harris is more than a leader—she is a force of change, driven by an unwavering passion to shape a brighter, more equitable future. It is with great honor that we present her with the Chairman's Award at this year's NAACP Image Awards, celebrating her relentless dedication to justice, equality, and the betterment of our society."

He continued:

"Her legacy is built on courage, compassion, and a profound commitment to uplifting those who need it most. Her tireless advocacy for the most vulnerable among us has made her a beacon of hope and progress."

The NAACP president and CEO, Derrick Johnson, said:

"Harris embodies the power, grace, and unyielding courage that Black women have long brought to the heart of the United States. With bold determination, Vice President Harris fights for justice, amplifies the voices of the marginalized, and stands as a beacon of hope."

He continued:

"She embodies the resilience and brilliance of Black women, uplifting their legacy as the driving force behind change in this country."

Other 2025 NAACP Image Awards honorees include the comedian Dave Chappelle and the Wayans family.
