George Foreman, whose name was widely recognized in the world of boxing, died on March 21, 2025, aged 76. He was both a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist.

He is also widely known for his connection to the George Foreman Grill. Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman grew up in poverty. He quit school and engaged in street brawls. Joining the Job Corps exposed him to boxing, which provided him with discipline and a new way of life. Years later, he became one of the sport's most famous names.


How George Foreman began boxing and made it to the Olympics

Foreman was raised in Houston's Fifth Ward, where he encountered numerous obstacles. In his attempt to divert his course, he enrolled in the Job Corps and learned about boxing from coach Doc Broadus.

His hard work took him to the U.S. Olympic boxing team. In 1968, Foreman won a gold medal in the Mexico City Olympics, beginning his professional boxing career.

His ascension in professional boxing and significant fights

George Foreman’s professional career took off after his Olympic win. In 1973, he became the world heavyweight champion by defeating Joe Frazier in a second-round knockout.

One of his most famous fights was the "Rumble in the Jungle" against Muhammad Ali in 1974. Ali’s strategy led to Foreman losing his title, a turning point in his career. He continued boxing for a few more years before retiring in 1977.

His return and subsequent success

After retirement, George Foreman turned minister and served with his community. To the shock of many, he returned to boxing in 1987 at 38. In 1994, when he was 45, he won the heavyweight title again, becoming the then-oldest champion in history.

He retired permanently in 1997 but continued to be involved in business and television. His success in boxing and other ventures kept him in the limelight.

Apart from boxing, Foreman gained fame for his business ventures, especially the George Foreman Grill. He also engaged in charity activities and youth programs.
