"We had absolutely no money": Cate Blanchett reveals why she only has one blurry wedding photo

Cate Blanchett, best known for her performances in films like Cinderella, where she played the evil stepmother, Don't Look Up, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has recently commented on her wedding photos.

She is currently promoting her upcoming film, Black Bag, which is produced by Steven Soderbergh. In the movie, Cate plays the lead role of Kathryn St. Jean, a seasoned intelligence agent.

In a recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Cate shared that she has only one wedding photo, which is also blurry. Cate is married to Andrew Upton, a playwright and screenwriter.

During the interview, they talked about a time when people were not attached to their phones or constantly taking pictures. This conversation led Cate to share the story behind her blurry wedding picture.

She explained that they didn’t have much money when she married Andrew in 1997, so they couldn’t afford a professional photographer. Instead, two friends took on the role of photographers at the wedding.

Describing what happened, she said:

''One guy got so drunk he forgot to load film in the camera and the other one had such a good time that he didn’t take any pictures, and as a result, we have one picture of our wedding. All we have is a blurry picture of the two of us getting in the car.''

She went on to admit that she was initially upset and saddened by the fact that her friends had failed to take proper wedding pictures. However, in the end, she was quite pleased that there were no wedding photos—this way, she could keep recalling the day and keep the memory alive.

The interview then shifted to her chemistry with her co-star in her upcoming film, Black Bag.

Cate Blanchett and Andrew have been married for nearly twenty-seven years and have three children together—three sons and a daughter, whom they adopted in 2015.

Her upcoming film Black Bag is set to release in U.S. and Canadian cinemas on March 14, 2025, and in the U.K. on March 21, 2025.

Other than Black Bag, Cate Blanchett will also appear in the comedy film Alpha Gang by the Zellner Brothers. She plays a lead role in the film and is also producing it through her company, Dirty Films. Additionally, she is starring in The Seagull at London's Barbican Theatre, which runs from February 25 to April 5, 2025.
