US Attorney General Pamela Bondi has directed federal prosecutors in the murder case of United Healthcare CEO. She has directed them to seek the death penalty for the murder suspect Luigi Mangione if he is found guilty of Federal charges of murder through the use of a firearm.
On December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson was shot outside a Hilton Hotel as he prepared to attend an investors’ conference. Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, and has been charged with the CEO’s murder.
In a statement released on April 1, 2025, Bondi described the murder of Brian Thompson as cold-blooded and shocking:
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America.”
She added:
“After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
The Attorney General’s office described Bondi’s directive as being in line with her Day One Memo as the Attorney General titled Reviving The Federal Death Penalty And Lifting The Moratorium On Federal Executions.

More Details on Luigi Mangione’s case
According to BBC, investigators claim that the murder suspect allegedly shot Mr Thompson because of his anger towards American healthcare insurance companies. The 26-year-old is charged with 11 state criminal counts, which include first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism. He faces life imprisonment without parole if he is convicted of the state charges.
Mangione is also being accused on the federal level of using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking, resulting in death. If convicted of the federal charges, he is eligible for the death penalty.
Prosecutors revealed that Mangione’s fingerprints match those discovered at the crime scene. They added that the federal and state cases will proceed parallel with one another.
Luigi Mangione has been incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. His next federal court hearing is scheduled for April 18, and his state-level trial continues in June 2025.
