Who is Vybz Kartel?
Vybz Kartel, whose full name is Adidja Azim Palmer, is a 49-year-old Jamaican dancehall musician. According to Rolling Stone, his “provocative lyrics and a mischievous public persona” have led to his attainment of “folk-hero status in Jamaica.”
Kartel has released quite a number of hit songs, including Summer Time, Dancehall Hero, and Romoing Shop. He has also collaborated with big artists, including Rihanna, Missy Elliot, Major Lazer, and Alison Rinds. He has also served as a source of inspiration to artists like Drake, who has cited him as one of his biggest music inspirations.
In 2014, Vybz was sentenced to life imprisonment after being indicted for the murder of his close associate and friend, Clive "Lizard" Williams. After his conviction was disregarded in 2024 by the UK Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the father of seven was released from prison on July 31, 2024.
