Selena Gomez has long been a target of relentless body-shaming. Social media users have been seen commenting on her fluctuating weight multiple times.

This time, Taylor Lautner stepped in to defend her. Addressing the issue, he asked netizens to be kinder and more thoughtful with their words.

On February 26, 2025, Taylor took to Instagram Stories to address the criticism directed at Selena. He shared a post from influencer Alex Light, which highlighted the comments Gomez has received about her appearance over the years.

Alex Light's post read:

"I KNOW - another day, another one of these ‘women can’t win’ posts from me… But bear with me because the contrast with this one is STARK. Selena was mocked last year at the SAG Awards for putting on weight, told to go on Ozempic. At this year’s SAG Awards, she’s slammed for losing weight, mocked for allegedly being on Ozempic."

She continued:

"This is not just about Selena, it’s about the impossible standards placed on all women - in the public eye or not. No matter what we do, someone will have an opinion. So let us remind ourselves: our bodies are ours, not up for public discussion."

Per People, Taylor Lautner reposted Alex's post on his Instagram stories and wrote:

"It's a cruel world full of hate out there. You can never please everyone nor should you have to. In my experience it doesn't make the words sting less, it just refocuses you onto what matters. And it sure isn't the shape, color or appearance of your body."

He ended with a reminder:

"Daily reminder to all of us to not forget how beautiful you are inside and out....and be a little bit nicer."

Netizens were quick to weigh in on the comment section of Alex Light's post as they showed support for Selena Gomez. Below are what some of them had to comment:

"She’s an absolutely gorgeous (at any weight) successful and incredibly talented woman. The attacks are about women who succeed on their own terms. Weight is just a stick that’s easy to strike with.", remarked an Instagram users.
"STOP 🛑 COMMENTING 🛑 ON 🛑 PEOPLES 🛑 BODIES!!!!! Literally no one’s business.", reminded another.
"Our culture is so disturbing. Why can’t people put all this energy and concern into their own wellbeing?? It’s a simple fact that if u are happy and fulfilled in ur own life, u don’t have time to care and comment on Selena Gomez’s body", chimed in a third.
"Can we PLEASE give this young lady a break! She is so open and honest about her life and struggles. Can people just respect her ??", supported a fan.

Selena Gomez's struggle with body-shaming

Selena has openly spoken about the impact of body-shaming on her mental and physical health. She was diagnosed with lupus in 2015. It is an autoimmune disease that led to a kidney transplant in 2017. Her condition causes weight fluctuations, People reports.

The publication also reports that in a 2019 podcast interview, Selena shared:

"I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me, that's when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff."

Despite repeatedly explaining that her weight changes are due to medication and health issues, online trolls continue to comment negatively about her appearance.
