Can't Nobody Hold Me Down singer, Diddy, has been under scrutiny since November 2023, when the first s*xual abuse lawsuit was filed against him.
In recent news, Diddy is facing legal trouble, as his lawyers wrote a short letter to the judge. They asked for a 60-day delay in the s*x trafficking trial as the prosecutors had just brought in new evidence as part of the superseding indictment against Diddy.
They also informed that the prosecutors were supposed to provide them with some important information by Wednesday, April 16, including a list of evidence and witnesses. But, they failed to do so, hence the request for the delay.
Why is Diddy's legal team seeking a 60-day delay in trial?
Diddy's legal team wrote a letter to the judge on Wednesday requesting a two-month delay in the trial. According to them, the feds have been too slow in sharing the evidence.
As per Deadline, the short letter given by Diddy's legal team, which includes Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, the letter reads:
The government opposes our proposed reasonable adjournment request, even though it is still producing discovery, including discovery on Count Four — a 15-year mandatory minimum count — and has indicated, over our objection, that it will not produce the exhibits and witness list due today, or additional 3500 material, while this request is pending.''
The letter continues:
''Under these circumstances, with discovery seemingly incomplete on a 15-year mandatory minimum count, we cannot, in good conscience, go to trial on the scheduled date. This is a problem that the government has created, yet it opposes our reasonable request.''
According to the letter, Diddy's lawyers are requesting more time, as the prosecutors have failed to submit the evidence required, in addition to some of the missing evidence relating to a serious charge that could lead to 15 years in jail.
The judge ordered that until the meeting on Friday, both sides should keep following the current schedule and also keep sharing any required information. He also mentioned that they would address the issue with the evidence related to the fourth victim in the meeting on Friday.
Although Diddy's legal team wants the trial to be delayed, the prosecutors think otherwise. On Monday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik said that they think the reason why Diddy's lawyers are asking for the delay is because they want more time to prepare.
Initially, the jury selection was to begin on May 5, however, the prosecutors criticized Diddy's lawyers over the questions presented to the potential jurors, which included topics like drugs, violence, and s*x. According to the prosecutors, such questions are not necessary to determine whether someone can fairly be a juror.
Diddy was arrested in September 2024 on federal charges including s*x trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation for prostitution, and is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
