The host of the Oscars 2025, Conan O'Brien, was recently seen shading the Emilia Pérez actress Karla Sofia Gascon during the event. The 97th Academy Awards took place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The event was also attended by Emilia Pérez cast, which got 13 nominations at the Oscars.
Conan O'Brien, being the host, took a dig at every nomination. When it came to Karla Sofia Gascon, Conan said:

He further added:

The joke was about Karla's recent controversy over old tweets. Earlier this year, some of her past posts resurfaced, causing criticism for containing racist and anti-Muslim remarks. Conan mentioned Jimmy Kimmel to joke that Gascon might mistake him for another Oscars host while tweeting.
Karla Sofia Gascon apologizes for her controversial posts
On January 30, a reporter on X with the name @KindaHagi shared multiple old tweets and posts of Emilia Pérez actress. The caption said:
"it’s so insane that karla sofía gascón still has these tweets up. straight up have never seen tweets this racist from someone actively campaigning to win an ACADEMY AWARD. there are more than a dozen…"
The post soon gained attention from The Academy fans and critics who shared their views and made the post viral. After the incident, Karla Sofia Gascon also shared a post on Instagram with the caption:
"These past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. I have been transparent because I have nothing to hide. For a long time, I felt lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others. But today, I finally know who I am. All I seek is the freedom to exist without fear, to create art without barriers, and to move forward with my new life."
She further added:
"They want to subject me to “cancel culture.” So I ask the Hollywood experts, the journalists who know me and have followed my career—how do I move forward?"
After posting this post on February 4, the Spanish actress uploaded another post on February 7, apologizing to the fans and users. In the caption, she wrote:
"Following Jacques interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference. I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way."
The actress has also reduced her posts and public appearances after facing backlash.
Karla is nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for the movie Emilia Pérez in the 2025 Oscars, making her the first openly transgender performer to get nominated for the Oscars.
Karla Sofia Gascon was also nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category for Emilia Pérez.
