As per Vatican News, Pope Francis' funeral is scheduled to be on April 26, 2025, at 10:00 am local time, at the Baroque plaza in front of St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. He will be buried at St. Mary Major, a church in Rome. The funeral mass will be held at St. Peter’s Square, as announced by the Holy See Press Office.
As of today, Pope Francis' body is kept in an open casket at Santa Marta residence at the Vatican for private viewing.

Pope Francis, remembered for his kindness and humility, died on April 21. The news of his death was announced on the morning of Easter Monday by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.
His body is kept in an open casket for private viewing, and on April 23, it will be moved from the chapel for the formal processions to St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Francis had asked to be buried at St. Mary Major in Rome. In his will, he mentioned how he wanted the tomb to be. He asked it to be simple, on the ground, without any fancy decorations, and with his name written in Latin, Franciscus.
As per Vatican News, the general public can bid their goodbyes and pay their respect to Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica on April 23, from 11:00 AM to midnight, on April 24, from 7:00 AM to midnight, and on April 25, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
The funeral ceremony is expected to garner a huge crowd, along with some of the world leaders who will be attending the funeral. The leaders include the US President Donald Trump and his wife, the Argentine president Javier Milei, the French president Emmanuel Macron, Belgium's prime minister Bart De Wever, Ireland's president Michael Higgins, and the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, among others.
Pope Francis was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14 after he suffered from bronchitis, and then four days later, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. He was then brought to his residence, and initially it looked as though he was getting better, but eventually his health deteriorated.
The Pope's successor has not been decided; however, a camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, has been chosen. Pope Francis made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square.
