A recent viral post purporting to be from Grimes on X (formerly Twitter) triggered widespread rumor-mongering. The post, uploaded on March 9, 2025, talked about personal problems and seemed to refer to a public personality, and many speculated that it was about Elon Musk.
The post quickly went viral, with thousands of users resharing and commenting on it. It later turned out to be a false post. This episode is an example of how quickly misinformation spreads on social media and how hard it is to contain narratives once they catch fire.
The initial tweet that sparked the rumors
The viral post wrongly quoted Grimes as saying:
"S*xuality and k*nks are just different for everyone. lots of Fortune 500 CEOs love getting p*gged."
The tweet also mentioned an unidentified "successful auto-maker" and hinted at private videos between the subject of the post, Grimes, and the former. Most users assumed the post was about Elon Musk, leading to heightened speculation.
Grimes responded to the viral tweet and said she did not write it
As the tweet kept going viral; Grimes spoke out against it. Following the viral reshares, she posted:
"PLEASE STOP FRAMING ME. I did laugh tho."
She later added a follow-up comment, admitting how she no longer controls her public perception:
"I was about to explain that again this sc*ndal is not true but I just recalled I decentralized grimes and I lost control of my image so I guess if I cannot suppress it - grimes is properly self copying and I can no longer suppress the others. Thrilling."
While Grimes tried to shed light on the matter, the tweet had already taken off, with some users still going on about it as if it were true.

The incident also sheds light on the spread of fake news on social media
The incident is illustrative of the ease with which misinformation picks up traction online. Although Grimes dispelled the controversy; there were still users treating the fabricated post as true, illustrating how difficult it is to manage narratives on the internet.
Public officials usually struggle with managing misinformation, and this case illustrates how quickly a false assertion can gain traction. The incident also prompts reflection on the power of social media in influencing public opinion and the role of users in fact-checking before forwarding information.
