The legal battle between Drake and Universal Music Group (UMG) that started this year in January is not close to being over. The latest update to the case is that Drake's legal team has been asking for a "broad discovery," which in layman's terms translates to both parties being able to request and ask for information, evidence, and documents from each other as long as it has some sort of connection to the case.

Note that Drake's legal team is in the middle of a discovery but not a "broad discovery." Recently, the music corporation requested that the federal judge pause the discovery in Drake's lawsuit against Kendrick Lamar. According to them, Drake's demands are unjust and his team requested "highly commercially sensitive documents," including Lamar's record deal.

UMG's reason behind this pause is that the case might be dismissed soon. In their words, the process for discovery which involved requesting documents might "be rendered moot" and all the effort that will go into it will be useless. They also stated,

"...Proceeding with discovery while the motion is pending would waste the parties’ resources and would constitute an undue burden on defendant" the label claims.

More details into UMG and Drake's legal battle

UMG has requested a pause in the discovery over the trial because the music agency feels that the expensive process might not be required if the judge declares an end to the trial.

In a statement, UMG expresses,

"Drake’s requests…seek production of confidential, proprietary, and highly commercially sensitive documents — including all contracts between UMG and Kendrick Lamar..." - the multinational music corporation explains.

However, Michael J. Gottlieb, who is Drake's attorney called UMG's request for a pause "unsurprising" and "desperate." He further elaborated,

"This motion is a ploy to delay producing documents and communications that UMG hopes to keep hidden and buried. If UMG has nothing to hide, it should not have an issue with discovery." - Gottlieb states.

The root cause of the legal battle can be found in a beef between two rappers gone wrong. The whole case spiraled out of control after Kendrick Lamar released his diss track titled Not Like Us in May 2024. The lyrics of the song labeled Drake as a "certified pe*ophile" which the God's Plan singer claimed was untrue.

So far, the trial has been moving slowly. Drake's lawyers even addressed the fact that UMG wished to pause discovery as unfair to Drake because he continues to be harassed by Lamar's songs, as seen in Kendrick Lamar's most recent Super Bowl performance. The judge has agreed to let UMG proceed with their next legal argument on Tuesday.
