Rapper Tupac Shakur’s murder trial has a new development. The main suspect Duane “Keefe D” Davis has requested a postponement of the trial which is set to begin in March 2025.
According to Billboard, on February 14, 2025, a court filing in Nevada outlined Davis' defense, stating that a private investigator found witnesses who could confirm he wasn’t in Las Vegas or at the shooting scene in 1996.
The motion also hinted that another person might have planned the attack and that witnesses are being interviewed about it. As quoted in the magazine, Davis’ defense attorney, Carl Arnold, said:
“This case involves decades-old allegations, and with every new piece of evidence, it becomes increasingly clear that critical facts have yet to be fully examined.”
According to Rolling Stone, a hearing will be held on February 18, 2025, to assess whether or not the trial needs to be postponed. The filing also notes that the murder might have been a setup that requires investigation to ensure a fair trial for Keefe D.
Davis claims he should not have been charged due to past immunity agreements with prosecutors. Still, authorities argue those agreements were limited and say they have strong evidence against him, including his statements in a memoir.
He has admitted to supplying the gun and being in the car during Tupac Shakur’s shooting in 1996 but now claims his past accounts were exaggerated for publicity and profit. His defense team is reportedly looking into witness statements and medical experts to explore other possible causes of Tupac Shakur’s death, noting he was initially in stable condition before passing away a week later.
What did David Roger say about Tupac Shakur’s murder witnesses and Keefe D’s indictment?
Former Clark County District Attorney David Roger explained that Keefe D allegedly gave a gun to his nephew and instructed him to shoot. While driving down Flamingo Boulevard after a Mike Tyson fight, they spotted Tupac Shakur, waving from a car with an entourage following him to a nightclub.
Keefe D’s nephew then fired, grazing Suge Knight’s forehead and fatally shooting Tupac Shakur, as reported by 3 News. He added:
“Amazingly, there are still witnesses who can lay out the crime. I mean, for example, the Grand jury they had Suge Knight’s bodyguard who was in Las Vegas at the time."
Roger continued:
"Right after the shooting, there were some females in a car they were trying to get away and they were identified at the crime scene, at least one of the drivers is still alive so there are witnesses who were still alive but the only person who can hang Keefe D is himself and his book.”
Las Vegas police reopened the case in 2018 after new information surfaced, particularly Keefe D’s public statements about his role. Although investigators had long considered Davis the mastermind behind the attack, they lacked enough evidence to move forward until his detailed admissions in a memoir provided key insights.
On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was riding in a BMW with Death Row Records founder Suge Knight when they stopped at a red light. A white Cadillac pulled up beside them, from which shots were fired. Keefe D was arrested in September 2023 and has since remained in jail.
