About the Notes feature on Instagram
The Notes feature allowed Instagram users to add notes to posts, which are visible to a user’s friends. According to USA Today, Instagram tweaked the Notes feature in July 2024 when the platform made it possible for users to add Notes to reels and posts.
On March 26, 2025, however, Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted a video to the social networking platform, revealing that the Notes feature would be discontinued. He said,
“We’re going to turn off Content Notes. If you don’t know, Content Notes are the ability to add a note to a photo, or a reel or a carousel on Instagram, that your friends can see, but not everybody can see.”
Providing reasons for discontinuing the Content Notes feature, Mosseri said,
“We launched it a few months ago in an effort to try to make Instagram more social and more fun. And in practice, it just wasn’t adopted by that many people. And we know Instagram has become too complicated over the years. And one of the ways we want to address that is being willing to turn off features that aren’t used by enough or that many people and Content Notes is one of those features.”
Mosseri also shared that Instagram strives to constantly add more relevant features, and will continue to end features that don’t garner a positive response from users.
