Rapper Kid Rock has shared his opinions about Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance. During his recent appearance on the Real Time with Bill Maher show, Rock noted that Lamar’s performance was the epitome of DEI, which refers to diversity, equity, and inclusion. He said:
“This was the epitome of DEI. Like, this is the epitome of DEI blowing up. Because you know, the NFL was all in just DEI and racism and all that stuff. They got Jay-Z in their book and this like Kendrick Lamar goes out there and basically turns DEI into an IED.”
Kid Rock continued:
“It’s like it’s all black people are all people of color speaking to his crowd in the hood, black people. It was like the most non-exclusive or the most exclusive thing ever and I am like f*ck yeah, that’s awesome. I am laughing, I am laughing my a** off.”
Kid Rock also admitted that the Super Bowl halftime show wasn’t his style but acknowledged the artistic expression behind it. He explained that having grown up immersed in hip-hop culture, breakdancing, DJing, graffiti, and rapping, he understood the genre more than most, especially compared to white people.
While many criticized the performance, he viewed it as an artist boldly embracing their craft without concern for opinions. Regarding the controversy surrounding the halftime show, Kid Rock questioned how Kendrick Lamar secured the lead spot, suggesting that Jay-Z played a key role.
He suggested that both Lamar and Jay-Z should credit Colin Kaepernick for the opportunity, arguing that the widespread debate sparked by Kaepernick’s anthem protest ultimately paved the way for such performances.
