Savage Garden’s member Darren Hayes shared an Instagram post on April 18, 2025, stating that he suffered an injury, which he called a “terrible accident.” He wrote that the incident happened on March 17, 2025, two months after he lost his mother.
Hayes shared that he had been trying to keep things to himself, but since his recovery would take a long time, he wanted to be honest about what happened. In his Instagram post, he wrote:
“I lost consciousness - I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed 3 times, losing consciousness each time. The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half.”
Darren Hayes went on:
“I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in my left side of my head and with 9 teeth shattered. I’m so lucky that I was found, and taken to the amazing team at the emergency room of St John’s Providence in Santa Monica, where they acted quickly.”
Darren Hayes shared that his injury was serious and could have been life-threatening if he had fallen differently. Doctors checked him for heart and brain problems, but didn’t find any. He had to undergo emergency reconstructive surgery on March 21, 2025, where surgeons put in a titanium brace to fix his broken jaw.
His mouth had to stay wired shut for at least eight weeks for proper healing. Darren Hayes also wrote:
“Prior to the fall I had been experiencing light headedness and fainting spells for a period before this incident. I am under incredible care. I have an amazing cardiologist and oral surgeon and we are trying to work out how and why I have been fainting.”
Darren Hayes thanked his medical team for taking good care of him
Hayes shared two pictures with the post: the first, of his swollen face, and the second was an X-ray of his jaw. It showed a metal brace holding the broken parts of his jaw together.
Darren Hayes explained that doctors found his heart and arteries to be healthy, and there were no signs of a brain tumor that might have caused his accident. He said he didn’t use drugs or drink alcohol, so the incident was surprising.
The cause was still being looked into. He wanted his fans to understand why he would take a long break. After his jaw healed, he still had a lot of recovery ahead, including getting his jaw working properly again and fixing his broken teeth. Thanking his fans, Darren Hayes wrote:
“I love you folks. I’m so grateful to be alive and every day I’m getting stronger. I’m almost one month post surgery now and I’m only just starting to feel better. I’m so grateful to my loved ones for coming to my rescue and to the doctors and nurses who have treated me with such care.”
Darren Hayes shared that he went through a tough time, dealing with a painful divorce, the loss of his mother, learning about his father’s death, and then suffering a serious injury. These experiences left him feeling sad at times, but he believed in his strength to recover and planned to come back even stronger.
