Andrew Scott opened up about his 2020 SAG Awards experience this year, which caused him to leave the event in an ambulance.

At the 2025 SAG Awards in Los Angeles, which took place on February 23, the actor recalled how he was rushed out of the event in an ambulance due to the pain caused by a kidney stone. Speaking with Variety, he revealed that he was standing next to co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge when he was hit with pangs of anguish:

“I was beside Phoebe and Laura Dern had just won best supporting actress. We were standing up,” Scott explained. “I don’t know if anyone has ever experienced having a kidney stone before, but it sends you — the pain is so immediate.”

Everything we know about Andrew Scott's health scare at the 2020 SAG Awards:

The Ripley star, 48, revealed that he immediately recognized the symptoms, as he had experienced the pain before. As Waller-Bridge brought him some water, Dern was accepting her award for Marriage Story. It was then that he realized he needed medical attention.

“I was in the back [of the room]… writhing around in agony,” he recalled. Despite the intensity of the situation, however, he revealed that no one ever found out about it.

“That’s too much,” he laughed. “People don’t need to know about that. It was grisly.”

This year, Andrew Scott was nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or limited series for playing the titular character in Ripley, though he did not bag any wins. He was nominated alongside Javier Bardem for his work on Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Colin Farrell for The Penguin, Richard Gadd for Baby Reindeer, and Kevin Kline for Disclaimer.

In the critically acclaimed Netflix show, Andrew Scott embodies the role of Tom Ripley, a character born of Patricia Highsmith in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. The thriller spans eight episodes, as it chronicles the life of Ripley, a con man and manipulative sociopath.

Reflecting on his character in a December 2023 interview, Scott revealed it took a toll on him:

"It was a heavy part to play," he told Vanity Fair at the time. "I found it mentally and physically really hard. That’s just the truth of it. "I feel like you’re required to love and advocate for your characters, and your job is to go, 'Why? What’s that?' You don’t play the opinions, the previous attitudes that people might have about Tom Ripley," added Scott.

Andrew Scott went on, noting that

you have to throw all those out, try not to listen to them, and go, 'Okay, well, I have to have the courage to create our own version and my own understanding of the character.'”
