Rock band Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong seems to have taken a dig at US Vice President JD Vance. During a concert for the Saviors tour in Melbourne on March 1, 2025, the band, led by Armstrong, changed the lyrics of Jesus of Suburbia. The original lyric had the following line:

“(Ooh) am I ret***ed, or am I just overjoyed?”

However, this was changed to:

“Am I ret***ed, or am I just JD Vance?”

Green Day showed support for Ukraine by modifying another line to mention the country, singing “From Ukraine to the Middle East” instead of the original reference to Anaheim. These weren’t the only improvisations Green Day did during its concert.

According to NME, while performing American Idiot, Armstrong and the band altered the lyrics, replacing “redneck agenda” with “MAGA agenda.” The singer had been vocal about his opinions of the Trump administration. In 2016, when Trump won the Presidential elections, Armstrong spoke to NME saying:

“I think a lot of people are grieving. To be honest, it feels like there has been a death in the family, is the best way to kind of describe what’s going on.”

He continued:

“It’s really hard to laugh while you are scared as what a lot of comedians say. So, I think it’s the same feeling right now and I think when everybody, when the smoke clears, you will start to see a lot more creative people speaking out.”

The Green Day lead vocalist suggested that nobody was prepared for the outcome, saying this was the reason why most people were shocked and outraged.

The Green Day singer endorsed Kamala Harris during the 2024 Presidential election

During a performance at the concert, Billie Joe Armstrong referenced politicians, Elon Musk, and Donald Trump, asking the crowd if they wished they would all stay silent.

While performing on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on December 31, 2023, Green Day changed a lyric in the song, replacing "redneck agenda" with "MAGA agenda." Musk reacted the next day on X, mocking the band for shifting from rebellious to mainstream.

According to NME, earlier in August 2023, Green Day released a charity t-shirt featuring Donald Trump’s mugshot. The design, which the band called the "Ultimate Nimrod" shirt, was based on the Nimrod album cover. The album's title covered Trump’s face.

During the 2024 Presidential election, Armstrong extended his support to Kamala Harris. In a self-recorded video posted on Instagram on November 5, 2025, Armstrong encouraged people to vote for Harris and Walz. He mentioned his connection to both regions, Harris being from the Bay Area and his wife from Minnesota, like Tim Walz.

Armstrong emphasized that while people may have differing opinions, the common goal should be removing Trump from office and moving forward. He urged voters, especially in Pennsylvania and California, to support the Democratic party, stressing the importance of high voter turnout to end Trumpism and ensure a better future.
