A fire at Walt Disney World's EPCOT yielded a heavy cloud of black smoke that billowed into the air and alarmed visitors. But what actually occurred? According to Yahoo News, Disney officials say the fire started backstage near the France Pavilion in EPCOT's World Showcase. The cause? A walk-in refrigerator in a back area, out of the way of guest zones. Contrary to sensational pictures circulating on the internet, the fire was soon put out, and no one was hurt.

Emergency personnel, even Disney's internal fire department and the Reedy Creek Fire Department, quickly snuffed out the blaze. Though a few visitors were evacuated from rides such as Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, which happened to be adjacent, the overall operation of the park wasn't affected in the slightest. France Pavilion quickly returned to its original state shortly afterward so that visitors could return to enjoying EPCOT with minimal interruption to their day.

Where was the fire located?

As stated in KSPT, the fire began inside one of the backstage areas behind the France Pavilion, one of the areas at EPCOT's World Showcase. The space is not open to visitors, so the fire initially posed no threat to guests.

Witnesses took pictures and videos of heavy smoke billowing from the back of the pavilion, and the internet speculated away. Disney confirmed that the fire remained in the backstage area and did not spread to where guests were or into attractions.

What was the cause of the blaze?

Unlike initial reports, the blaze had nothing to do with nighttime fireworks or pyrotechnics in EPCOT. Instead, Disney officials have said that a walk-in refrigerator malfunctioned and caused the fire. The cause of the breakdown is being looked into, but nothing indicates entertainment equipment was in play.

Walk-in refrigerators are widely used for food storage within amusement parks, and while fires in refrigeration equipment are rare, electrical or mechanical failure may, on occasion, result in overheating and fire.

How quickly was the fire contained?

Thanks to Disney's trained emergency personnel, the fire was put out within about 20 minutes. As KSTP and Fox9 stated, the fire trucks arrived quickly, preventing the flames from spreading beyond the point of origin.

Even though the smoke seemed to have originated from numerous sources throughout the park, visitors were never in direct harm. The reaction was so quick that the situation was always under control, and evacuations aside from the immediate vicinity were never required.

Were any attractions affected?

For precautionary reasons, some visitors adjacent to the France Pavilion were evacuated briefly, including some adjacent to Remy's Ratatouille Adventure. No rides were affected, and regular operations were resumed soon after the fire was put out. The remainder of EPCOT proceeded as usual, and most visitors were unaware of what occurred.

Is there an ongoing investigation?

Yes, USNews states that Disney officials are investigating precisely what caused the walk-in refrigerator to fail. While electrical or mechanical issues are the most likely explanation, additional information will become known as an investigation continues.

As Disney has stringent safety protocols, precautionary steps can be taken to avoid such an accident in the future. Theme parks generally inspect the equipment to reduce risks; alterations will probably be made if necessary.

Although shocking to the eye, the EPCOT fire was immediately taken into control with no incident or interruption. Disney's prompt response to the crisis left vacationers safe, and the devastated area reopened only shortly after.

Although the view of smoke caused consternation, EPCOT's operation eventually returned to normal, permitting people to continue their magical experience without disruption.
