Becky G says she's got Tyla's back.
Tyla was honored with the Impact Award at Billboard's Women in Music ceremony this Saturday, and in a video circulating on X, she can be seen accepting it from Becky G, before announcing that she will be placing the award down.
The latter, however, offered to hold it for a thankful Tyla, noting:
"You want me to hold it? I got you. I'm honored."
Just this past September, the Water singer came under fire for asking Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X, who presented the Moon Person accolade to her for Best Afrobeats at the 2024 VMAs, to hold her award for her as it was seemingly too heavy.
"Oh my gosh. You guys know me and holding awards. Yo, I cannot — I'm not strong enough. Please, please," Tyla said at the time, prompting Lil Nas X to oblige, while Halle stayed back.
However, Tyla asking for help on stage set the internet off, seeing as everyone began dragging her for giving the award to Lil Nas X instead of Bailey. However, the South African songstress later took to X to slam trolls for making things "weird":
"Y'all make everything weird…," she noted at the time, adding, "I was not asking my girl Halle… We just girls, STFU I WON A VMAAAA."
Read Tyla's acceptance speech below as she thanks her mother for playing a huge role in her life:
During her acceptance speech, Tyla said,
“You never know how something you say or do—a lyric, a performance—might ignite in someone else, and what they, in turn, will pass forward to another person. So I feel very lucky—for my fans, my Tygers, who have given me such an exciting life, allowing me to share and grow into all the different versions of myself as an artist and as a woman.”
In an interview with Billboard on the red carpet, Tyla reflected on how she felt about receiving the Impact Award,
“It feels amazing not a lot of people get recognized so I’m really lucky and grateful to be here and I’m grateful for the people who impacted me in my career and my life and who got me here,” she shared. “Just happy to be here to celebrate the other honorees. We also look sexy, we look hot.”
When probed about whom she felt it was most important to have an impact on, she remarked:
“Any form of impact is a blessing, you know I just want to be able to inspire as many people as I can, wherever they are. Anyone who sees anything in me that reminds them of themselves—it’s a blessing.”
When probed about who had the biggest impact on her, she said,
“My mother, I’ll be speaking about her today. Definitely my mother.”
Back in September 2024, Halle Bailey did not address the situation, and the two have yet to mingle in public together. As for now, her feelings on the situation remain unclear.
