Camila Cabello is making it known that she doesn't want to be compared to another singer.
The Havana singer sat down for an interview with Dork in an article that came out this week, where she addressed the claims that her track, I Luv It, ripped off elements from Charli XCX's I Got It. While the two have denied the notion of any drama stirring between them, the former revealed that the accusations still affect her:
“It crushed me,” she told the outlet. “I don’t know how other artists do it because the negative stuff really depresses me. “It was a very weird, intense time, and I started dissociating, which has only happened a very few times in my life.” She added, “I was being myself, and it turns out some people really didn’t like it. I just didn’t feel like I could ever go through that again.”
Everything we know about the drama between Charli XCX and Camila Cabello:
Back in July 2024, Charli XCX addressed rumors of a rift brewing between her and Camila Cabello head-on as claims that the latter plagiarized her 2017 track kept intensifying. In an interview with The Independent at the time, she said she wasn't concerned with any of the comparisons being made between the two tracks:
“What I was worried about was the relationship between me and [Charli],” she said.
Cabello, who worked with Charli in 2018 when they opened for Taylor Swift during her Reputation tour, revealed not long after that Cabello called her to assure her that there were no hard feelings between them:
“But [Charli] called me and was like, ‘Hey, I hope you don’t think that I’m actually mad. This is me playing into the Brat era,’” recalled Cabello, according to The Independent. “And I totally respect that, you know?”
In the rest of the interview with Dork, Camila Cabello also reflected on her hit summer track, Havana, and how it came to be:
“So many people didn’t believe in that song,” she told the outlet. I was told it was too slow, it needed more drums, it sounded too Broadway.” Cabello, who decided to go with her gut when it came to the track, added, “I just really enjoy taking risks. My music could easily become a business of, ‘This is what people want from you, so let’s do it over and over again’. I’d probably strike gold every time, but the thought of that makes me feel anxious. I have tried to make radio-friendly pop records, but that’s just not me. The point of being creative is to stretch and grow.”
Camila Cabello is slated to travel to Australia for two big shows this August as part of her Yours, C tour, which is in support of her latest album C,XOXO.
