Dark Storm claims responsibility for the significant outage experienced on X, on the 10th of March 2025.
Formerly known as Twitter, the social media platform X, suffered a large-scale DDoS attack on March 10th, which led to widespread disruptions. The leader of the pro-Palestinian group Dark Storm, during a conversation with Ed Krassenstein, claimed full responsibility for the attack, stating that, the attack was "just a demonstration of strength," and had no political motivation.
DDoS Attack on Twitter
The attack led to global service outages, with thousands of users complaining about issues they were facing accessing X. Over 40,000 reports were registered by the outage tracking service by 10 a.m. ET. Users couldn't access the app or the website and were faced with error messages and connection failures all around the world.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, called the incident, a "massive cyberattack," implying that a well-organized entity was behind it, and even noted that the attack originated from IP addresses linked to the "Ukraine area."
One X user took to the platform, and implied through a fictional conversation piece between Dark Storm and Elon Musk, that Musk just wanted to blame Ukraine:
"Hackers: We hacked #Twitter #X Musk: We know nothing of the largest #DDoS attack our company ever experienced except that it's #Ukraine Hackers: no, it was us Musk: UKRAINE! Hackers: It was us, us, US!! #DarkStormTeam"
It Was Dark Storm
The hacktivist group Dark Storm, in a conversation with entrepreneur and social media influencer Ed Krassenstein, claimed full responsibility for the attack and even stated that firstly, the attack was not from Ukraine like Musk said, and that they "can attack again. A stronger attack this time."
The leader of Dark Storm, further asked that Elon Musk "must provide evidence for his claim," regarding Ukraine, as they adamantly deny this to be the case.
X's Mitigation Efforts
X deployed immediate mitigation measures by activating DDoS protection services and has since then, implemented stricter traffic filtering. The platform has also enforced a new CAPTCHA verification service for users generating excessive requests, which is known as a very common technique to identify and block automated bots.
Musk claimed that engineers were working to stabilize the platform and stop any further disruptions, but, if anything, the attack showed the vulnerabilities of X's security infrastructure, which has led to renewed discussions on whether the platform is even prepared for a future large-scale attack.
The Rise of Hacktivism and Future Threats
Even though Dark Storm claimed that this attack was just a show of force and power, their previous actions suggest that a future attack could be more targeted and even politically motivated.
The official page of Security Tribe even posted a small video on X, suggesting that all users must know how these things work.
Cybersecurity experts warn that major oniline platforms remain high-value targets for these hackers, whether they be for ideological reasons, financial extortion or just geographical disruptions. As these attacks and attacker grow stronger, companies must continually update their security and defense protocols to sheild themselves against such threats.
