South Korean police have launched an investigation into a Japanese woman, who is accused of kissing BTS member Jin without his consent during a public fan event in June 2024. The incident took place in Seoul.
The incident has sparked discussions about fan boundaries and personal space, particularly in an internationally hyped industry like K-pop, where celebrities have to maintain close interactions with their supporters.
Kim Seok-jin, famously known as Jin, was celebrating his discharge from South Korea’s mandatory 18-month military service and the 11th anniversary of BTS when he hosted a “free hug” event, Rolling Stone reports. Several fans attended the gathering, who lined up for a chance to have a memorable moment with the K-pop idol.
However, during one such hug, a Japanese woman allegedly kissed Jin on the cheek without his consent. The woman was in her 50s, as per reports from NBC News suggest. The incident was caught on video and was quick to go viral. Multiple viewers noticed and claimed that Jin was visibly uncomfortable.
Following the incident, an online complaint was filed. It prompted South Korean authorities to launch an official investigation into the matter. With assistance from Japanese police, the woman’s identity was confirmed.
However, she has not been publicly named. Reports indicate that she later wrote about the experience in a blog post, allegedly describing how her lips touched Jin’s skin. She also reportedly commented about the softness of the BTS star's skin.
The Songpa police station in Seoul has summoned the woman for questioning on possible s*xual harassment charges. However, she has so far refused to appear. Authorities have not disclosed what further actions they might take if she continues to ignore the summons.
A representative for BTS and their management company, HYBE, has not yet commented on the matter.
Jin’s career and military service
Jin is the eldest member of BTS and was the first to enlist in South Korea’s military in December 2022. His service marked the beginning of a temporary hiatus for the globally famous boy band, as all seven members were required to fulfill their military obligations, per the South Korean rules.
Jin completed his duty in June 2024 and was the first to be discharged, followed by fellow member J-Hope in October 2024. The remaining five members, RM, V, Jimin, Jungkook, and Suga are still serving.
Shortly after his return, Jin released his debut solo album, 'Happy.' The fan event in June 2024 was one of his first major public appearances after his military discharge.
The incident that happened in this fan event is still under investigation. South Korea has strict laws regarding sexual harassment, and non-consensual physical contact can lead to legal consequences.
