Saturday Night Live (SNL) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. SNL50 opened up the celebration on Sunday night, February 16, 2025, with a reimagined version of The Lawrence Welk Show skit. The 2025 cast included the original cast member, Kristen Wiig, and new cast members including Kim Kardashian, Scarlett Johansson, Ana Gasteyer, and Will Ferrell.
After almost four years since Kim Kardashian hosted SNL, she finally made a return to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary. During The Lawrence Welk Show skit, Kristen Wigg was seen playfully drumming on Kim Kardashian's butt. Soon, netizens commented on how silly and hilarious the skit was. One of the fans commented,
"lol 😂 lol 😂 it’s so FUNNY 😆" - @VEROCHICKY wrote on X.
However, not everyone had the same opinions about the skit. There are also a few who left comments saying comedy is dead and the skit they chose did not make sense.
What do netizens think of the opening skit at SNL50?
The official Saturday Night Live X account (@nbcsnl) posted a clip from the celebrations of the SNL50. @nbcsnl posted The Lawrence Welk Show skit featuring Johansson, Kardashian, Gasteyer, Ferrell, and Wiig.
The comment section saw mixed reactions to the choice of cast for the opening act of the SNL50 and the sketch itself. Here are a few of the comments:
"the perfect mix of classic and quirky, always a good choice!" - @blesskatty
Another fan who presumably saw the original show of The Lawrence Welk Show skit wrote:
"love a good throwback!" - @easecn
One of the fans appreciated SNL50's first skit choice by saying:
"This is genius for a first skit. As the majority of you prob don't know (less you over 70) the lawrence welk show was HUGE from 55-74. The fact that they did that skit, covers the 70s era fans, the 90/2k fans were covered with the cast, all set in 25 with modern humor. Bravo..." - @Nathecat914
Another X user commented how they seem to be enjoying themselves on the show and that they should just ignore the hate comments. They wrote,
"Everyone seems like they’re having a blast! As they should! Celebrate success. Screw the haters!" - @BrianHa84402559
At the same time, the comment section was not just filled with admiration and appreciation for the SNL50 skit. Here are a few other things X users had to say:
"This is really bad. So far. Seriously what were you thinking of not starting out with Original Cast episodes ? You may have done tribute 2 days ago but the Public didn’t see it. This is BSCrap right now. Minute 10 second clips won’t suffice." - @susantowerpool
"Wow, these clips are awful. Comedy really is dead." - @mexigreekmom74
"SNL just keeps getting more and more lame. Pathetic and cringe." - @sunshineon2024
While one netizen pointed out Wiig's drumming on Kim Kardashian's butt saying,
"I don't get the drumming on Kim's butt. It made no sense at all" - @WenDogeCoin
While many were pleased with the throwback to The Lawrence Welk Show starting the first show of SNL50, some were not pleased with the choice of cast among other things. Nonetheless, the celebrities who appeared in this skit seemed to enjoy themselves having a good time celebrating SNL's 50th anniversary/
