Sean Kingston, the famous rapper and singer, and his mom, Janice Turner, are guilty of several wire fraud charges. The federal court in Fort Lauderdale made this decision on Friday. Both now face big legal troubles, with their punishment to be decided in July.
The rapper posted a touching Instagram story with a message to his mother,
"Love you!!!! I promise you this is not the end," he wrote.
According to the New York Post, the court found that Sean Kingston and Turner participated in scams by falsely claiming to have paid for luxury items—such as expensive cars and jewelry—via bank transfers. The prosecutors said these payments never happened, letting the duo get goods and services. This act, which tricked many businesses, led to them being found guilty of five wire fraud charges. Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Sean Kingston's lawyer, Zeljka Bozanic, didn't agree with the decision and said they'd take it to a higher court.
"We do not agree with the verdict," Bozanic told Entertainment Weekly. "We are thankful that Mr. Kingston was allowed to remain out on bond while awaiting sentencing. We will file an appeal at that time."
Turner's attorney, Humberto R. Dominguez, also said they'd fight the ruling. The federal government took Turner right after the verdict, but Kingston got to stay out. He put up his $500,000 house and $200,000 in cash as bond. Still, he's stuck at home with an electronic monitor.
Legal troubles of Sean Kingston and Janice Turner
The legal troubles surrounding Kingston and his mother are not new. EW previously reported that Kingston faced charges like grand theft, organized fraud, and using others' personal info for crimes. His conviction also broke his probation from an earlier case of selling stolen stuff. Turner's past isn't clean either. In 2006, she said she was guilty of bank fraud and spent over a year in prison.
Law enforcement claims Kingston and Turner tricked several companies, including a car dealer and multiple jewelry shops, through deceptive financial transactions, according to EW. Their scams allowed them to get high-end stuff without paying for it.
Both Kingston and Turner are awaiting their sentencing just as their legal teams remain dedicated to challenging this ruling and appeal, hoping they can get the conviction overturned.
For now, Sean Kingston remains under strict supervision with limited freedom due to electronic monitoring. The sentencing will determine their punishment and its impact on Kingston's music career and public image.
