Euphoria actor Hunter Schafer voiced her distress over Donald Trump’s administration. The issue surrounds her new passport, which lists her as a male despite her paperwork mentioning female.
She recently took to her TikTok to share a self-recorded video mentioning that she had a “harsh reality check” and thought it was important to share the experience. She said:
“Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I am never gonna stop being trans. A letter and a passport can’t change that and f*ck this administration. And I don’t really have an answer on what to do about this but I feel it was important to share. This is real.”

Hunter Schafer shared that her gender markers were first updated during her teenage years when she obtained her driver’s license and passport, both of which had identified her as female ever since. However, while filming in Barcelona last year, her car was broken into, and her bag, containing her passport, was stolen.
Since her original passport was valid until her 30s, she had to get an emergency replacement, a temporary copy of the original meant for short-term use. Upon returning to the U.S., Hunter Schafer needed to replace the temporary document with a permanent passport.
Schafer visited the Federal Passport Agency to complete the process, which she had done once before. The application was filled out as usual, with her gender marked as female. However, when she received the new passport and opened it, she discovered that the gender marker had been changed to male.
Hunter Schafer said passport agencies might now cross-check information with the birth certificates
Hunter Schafer explained that she wasn’t sharing her experience to create fear, stir up drama, or seek sympathy but felt it was important to highlight the reality of the situation. She admitted she was shocked that it happened and acknowledged her privilege as a white, thin, transgender woman who fits conventional beauty standards. Despite these advantages, she still faced this issue.
She mentioned that she had never changed her birth certificate, which led her to believe that agencies handling passports might now be required to cross-check birth records. This was the first time she encountered such a problem since updating her gender marker nearly a decade ago.
Hunter Schafer expressed concern that this change was a direct result of the current administration and worried about the gradual implementation of restrictive policies. She compared it to historical patterns seen in the rise of fascism and emphasized that these changes were real. She stressed that no one, regardless of wealth, race, or appearance, is exempt from these developments, adding:
“I also want to say I don’t give a f*ck that they put an ‘M’ on my passport. It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness. However, it does make life a little harder.”
Hunter Schafer shared that she hadn’t yet tested the impact of the passport issue but expected to face challenges when traveling internationally for the first time with the new document.
She believed it would likely force her to disclose her identity to border patrol agents more frequently than she would prefer. While speaking about her situation, she also considered how this might affect other transgender women experiencing the same issue.
