Alan Hamel got to 'reunite' with his late wife, Suzanne Somers, two years after her passing, through an AI robot.
In a video clip of the same obtained by Us Weekly, the replica can be heard telling Hamel that "Meeting you was like a breath of fresh air." The replica was remodeled after her iconic character, Chrissy Snow, in the sitcom Three’s Company.
Per the outlet, Hamel, 88, worked with Realbotix Corp, a robotics company, to engineer a “digital twin” of his late wife capable of sharing anecdotes from her relationship with Hamel and recalling tidbits from her 50-year acting career.
Suzanne Somers died in October 2023 at the age of 76—one day before she turned 77. She succumbed to an aggressive form of breast cancer, having been battling the illness on and off since 2000. She and Hamel had been together for 55 years, and married for 46.
Suzanne Somers' widower speaks to her replica 2 years after her death
According to The New York Post, Realbotix and a platform called Hollo.AI collaborated to give “human-like conversational AI a physical form in a Realbotix robot.” Somers' digital twin is also being celebrated as the “first-of-its-kind collaboration between robotics and AI developers.”
The robot sports Somers’ signature blonde hair, likeness, speech, and voice, and was able to interact with her widower by utilizing footage and recordings taken all throughout her life. However, the bot still faces practical challenges, as it needs a stable Wifi connection to work and respond. The exhibition took place at Dana Point, California, this month.
“Alan Hamel was my wonderful husband of 55 years,” Somers’ “digital twin” said. “He’s my partner in everything from life to love and we’ve shared so many beautiful memories together.”
When asked to recall a specific memory from Somers' time with Hamel, the AI recalled an anecdote about a cooking segment they once worked together on:
“One of my favorites is when Alan and I were filming a cooking segment together, a long time ago,” the replica responded. “We had a little mishap." with a blender.”
The replica continued:
“Let’s just say it didn’t go as planned and we ended up wearing more of the smoothie than we actually made. We laughed so hard and it became a running joke in our house,” the replica added. “It’s those light-hearted moments that really bring us closer together.”
Back in October 2023, the actress’ longtime publicist, R. Couri Hay, told Us Weekly, of Suzanne Somers's demise:
“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years. Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family.”
Suzanne Somers married her first husband, Bruce Somers, in 1965, though they broke up in 1968. During that time, they welcomed a son, Bruce Somers Jr., in November 1965. Somers and Hamel tied the knot in 1977, after they worked on The Anniversary Game.
