Former MTV host Matt Pinfield has broken silence after surviving a major health crisis earlier this year.

The 63-year-old radio personality is known for his passion for rock music. Matt suffered a stroke in January 2025 and spent two months in a coma. Now, he is discharged from the ICU and is recovering at a rehabilitation center in Los Angeles, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Per the outlet, Matt shared in a statement:

"Guys, I'm alive. I'm recovering and am going to come back swinging. I was unresponsive for two months. Friends were thinking they were coming to see me for the last time. The doctors never expected me to speak or to walk again."

While Matt Pinfield's condition was critical, his eldest daughter, Jessica Pinfield, took charge of his medical and financial decisions. Acknowledging her role in taking care of him during hospitalization, he mentioned to THR:

"She is the one who saved my life. She protected me."

As Matt Pinfield is regaining his health, he is reportedly looking forward to returning to his passion via playing music.

Who is Matt Pinfield?

Matt Pinfield has been a familiar face in the music industry, particularly for fans of alternative and rock music. He gained attention in the 1990s as the host of MTV’s 120 Minutes. The show was dedicated to alternative rock and new artists.

Pinfield has also worked as a radio DJ, television host, and music executive, Rolling Stone reports. He served as Vice President of A&R and Artist Development at Columbia Records.

Matt hosted multiple radio shows on SiriusXM, and also inspired a song: The Killers' All These Things That I’ve Done, which later became the title of his 2016 memoir.

Even in the hospital, Matt Pinfield’s passion for music was evident as friends recalled how, upon waking from his coma, he started talking about music. He discussed Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale. Per The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on the matter, stating:

"My friends said I went on about 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' and how they couldn’t keep up with what I was saying. They were, like, ‘Yeah, he’s still got that brain.’"

Health struggles

Matt Pinfield's health issues began in early January when he suffered a severe stroke, which left him unresponsive for two months. During this time, he also battled pneumonia and required a ventilator to breathe, the THR report suggests.

By late February, he was moved out of the ICU, and his condition began improving. Matt remains optimistic about his recovery and he is willing to return to work once he regains his strength. He stated to THR,

"I am definitely going to take some time to recover. Then I will do my radio shows again and get back to work doing what I love, which is to entertain people playing music."

However, his return will not be immediate.
