Baseball outfielder Brett Gardner’s son, Miller Gardner, died after falling ill during a vacation. The outfielder and his wife, Jessica, shared a statement through the New York Yankees’ X page on March 23, 2025. The couple wrote:

“With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”

They shared that Miller was a lovable son and brother whose absence was impossible to grasp. His bright smile and love for football, baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing made every day full of life and joy. They expressed deep gratitude for the support and believe their faith, family, and friends will help them through this heartbreaking loss.

They shared their thoughts with Miller’s teammates and other families who have experienced similar tragedies. Brett Gardner and Jessica asked for privacy as they grieve and seek healing.

The couple have been married since 2007. They have two sons, Hunter and Miller, with Miller being the younger of the two. The New York Yankees also shared an X post, writing:

“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner. Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn't just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years, so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller.”

Carlos Mendoza and Aaron Boone share condolences for Brett Gardner’s loss

Baseball manager Carlos Mendoza shared condolences for Brett Gardner’s family during a press conference on March 24, 2025. He said:

“Like to start by sending my thoughts and prayers to Jessica and Brett Gardner on the loss of his son. Obviously, I had a really good relationship with him. You know, we are thinking about him and with the whole Mets organisation. I think about the Gardner’s family.”

When asked what his relationship with Garner was, Mendoza replied that they used to play in minor leagues in 2006-07. He continued:

“And then, I watch him, you know, his whole career. I had the opportunity to coach him in the big leagues and I got two boys too and they were pretty close.”

According to The New York Post, baseball manager Aaron Boone expressed that the team considers itself a family, and even though Brett Gardner has been away for some time, that connection remains strong.

He acknowledged that many in the clubhouse know the Gardner family well, making the news especially difficult. Boone emphasized that they would keep the family in their prayers and offer support however they could, calling the situation heartbreaking and unimaginable.

The New York Yankees expressed their sorrow for Brett Gardner, Jessica, Hunter, and their loved ones as they mourn Miller's death. They described him as having an energetic spirit, a lively personality, and a kind heart. The team emphasized its unwavering support for the Gardner family while respecting their privacy.
