Boxing heavyweight champion George Foreman has died at the age of 76.

The two-time world heavyweight boxing champion and Olympic gold medalist, known for his showdown against Muhammad Ali that spawned the iconic ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ title bout, passed away on Friday, a verified fan account on social media has revealed.

According to Marca, the boxer amassed a staggering net worth of $300 million during his career. After a legendary boxing career and following a few financial setbacks, Foreman launched a product under his own name, the George Foreman grill.

In the mid-1990s, the grill was a massive hit, having sold 100 million units worldwide in its initial years. He earned a whopping $138 million in profits. However, he later sold his stake in the brand for about $137.5 million in cash and stock.

From there, he ventured into fitness equipment, clothing lines, and philanthropy, allowing him to sustain his large family, spread across five marriages, 12 children, and 15 grandchildren.

George Foreman's life and legacy explored

The Instagram post that announced George Foreman's demise reads as follows:

“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose."

The statement continues:

"A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own.”

Foreman is widely regarded as one of the most powerful punchers in boxing history. He nabbed Olympic gold in his 25th amateur fight at the age of 19, came out on top against another boxing great, Joe Frazier, and then nabbed the heavyweight title twice. In 1974, he went up against Muhammad Ali in the then Kinshasha, Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“I was one strong heavyweight punching fighter,” Foreman told Reuters in 2007. “I was one punching machine, and that was the first time I delivered everything I had and nothing worked.”

Foreman took a year off after his loss against Ali, only to return a year later to face his second professional loss. By 1977, he decided to retire and become an ordained minister in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

George Foreman's last fight, however, came in 1997, bringing an end to his career in the ring with 76 wins and five losses.
