Dropkick Murphys frontman Ken Casey recently shared his perspective on the current state of American society, emphasizing what he sees as a growing class divide. In an interview with Boston’s WBUR, Casey expressed concerns about economic inequality and the influence of the ultra-wealthy, framing the issue as a “class war” rather than a political one.
The Celtic punk band's recent comments echo their previous vocal opposition to Donald Trump and his policies. In a moment that went viral, Casey drew attention to a front-row fan's MAGA shirt noting, that it was made in Nicaragua, not the US. When questioned about the reasoning behind his remarks, Casey replied,
“my point is that this is a class war, not a political war. We are being tricked to fight amongst each other so that the ultra wealthy can milk us of everything we have.”
Despite these strong opinions, Casey insists that his statements are not always premeditated.
Ken Casey's perspective on immigration and American values
Ken Casey acknowledged that his primary focus is performing, but when he feels compelled to speak out, he does. He also stated that he wants Dropkick Murphys to be remembered as a band that took a stand on social issues, regardless of whether it benefits them or leads to backlash.
The band has long been known for its pro-union and pro-immigrant stance, a position Ken Casey reiterated in the interview. He stressed that America was built on immigration so that people whose families came from other countries shouldn't push for policies that push people back out or make their entry more difficult.
The pro-union vocalist said,
“I never plan to say anything,” he explained. “Some nights I’m worried about just trying to remember the lyrics — I gotta do my job first.”
He said,
“ I want to be remembered as the band that spoke out, whether it benefits or hurts us. And now, as we put ourselves more in the crosshairs speaking out, I feel like more people on the left are like, ‘We gotta support this band,’ which is nice, but I don’t really care. It’s who we are and what we do.”
Dropkick Murphys have always supported immigrants, and Ken Casey confirmed this. He said,
“The way I was taught is, if your family were immigrants to this country and came for a better life, the price you pay for that is you can never say that ‘no one else is welcome,’”
He added,
"That is what America was built on.”
“Someone who is a Trump fan will say I’m dividing people. I say, ‘My words are dividing people? No. I’m not the one that’s doing all these horrible policies. I’m just speaking up.’” Ken Casey said for Trump supporters.
