Record executive Suge Knight, and rapper Jermaine Dupri, made headlines following a confession made by the former. During an interview with The Art of Dialogue, Knight revealed that he once hit Dupri in 2005. Knight is currently behind bars and from what it seems in the interview posted on YouTube on February 27, 2025, the conversation happened over a telephone call.
The interviewer asked him if there was any truth to the rumor that he slapped Jermaine Dupri. He replied that some of it was true and the incident involved rapper Lil Bow Wow.
Suge Knight claimed that when he went to prison, Snoop Dogg took Lil Bow Wow to Jermaine Dupri, who signed him. Suge Knight confronted Dupri when they met and according to him, the incident turned out to him:
“It wasn’t one of those where somebody gets slapped so hard they slide down the stret, but it was something that made you get your attention.”
Knight said Jermaine Dupri was one of the smartest people around. Dupri called Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson’s father, at the time of the incident and said he needed help because Suge Knight seemed mad at him. Joe Jackson replied:
“I know Suge. Big Suge is a friend of mine.”
Since the phone was on speaker, Knight greeted Jackson after which he started laughing. Dupri told Jackson that Knight might get in a physical confrontation after which Jackson urged Knight to refrain from doing so.
Suge Knight admitted that although he had promised not to harm Jermaine Dupri, he still ended up pouring a cup of coffee over his head. This upset Joe Jackson, who was on the phone at the time, expressing his frustration and reminding Knight of his word.
The incident between Suge Knight and Jermaine Dupri happened as Lil Bow Wow had contractual obligations to the former
Knight said Bow Wow was still under contract with him, and he had already invested money in the deal. He stated that any business involving him required financial compensation, no matter the amount. According to Knight, Jermaine Dupri was aware of Bow Wow's contract but still moved forward, with a significant sum of money exchanged.
Knight said he chose not to interfere with Bow Wow’s career or cause trouble for his mother, whom he respected. However, he wanted payment from either Jermaine Dupri or Snoop Dogg. Around that time, Knight recalled getting shot in Miami. When he later confronted Dupri about the situation, he claimed Dupri avoided giving a direct answer.
After the incident and the minor altercation, Knight responded by telling Jackson he was done with the conversation and never brought it up again.
Reflecting on the incident, Suge Knight offered a lighthearted apology to Dupri and other shorter men he had confronted over the years. He acknowledged that despite Dupri’s actions, he shouldn’t have reacted that way and joked about needing to leave smaller individuals alone, including Ray J and his crew. Knight, who rarely apologizes, said he hoped his apology would be accepted.
Additionally, as per HipHopdx, it has been alleged that Knight slapped Dupri a decade earlier on the same night Big Jake Robles, Knight’s friend and bodyguard, was killed.
