Rappers Meek Mill and Rick Ross have been making headlines after reports of Mill being allegedly held hostage by the street gang alliance Rollin’ 60s Crips circulated online. This goes back to 2024 when gang member Luce Cannon claimed so while speaking to DJ Akademiks on the Off the Record podcast.
As seen in the podcast video, the incident happened after Mill’s X (formerly Twitter) posts. Cannon said:
“We caught him at the club where he was performing at and then we grabbed.”
Cannon described how, the moment Meek Mill arrived, security immediately turned around. He approached Mill, greeted him, and told him to call Rick Ross. According to Cannon, they took him outside and waited. He also claimed that he and his group demanded $50,000 in cash from Rick Ross to release Mill.
While this is what Luce Cannon claimed in the podcast, Meek Mill had a different story to share. On March 26, 2025, he shared a screenshot of the story covered by HipHopDx on X and wrote:
“This guy must be using a story to confuse his indictment because I never seen him B4 ...I woulda put him to "gods test" on the spot! I never even met buddy but I don't "negotiate" with fake thugs" ask him what chain because all my chains some shit lol watches all 300k up vibes.”
When asked if Meek Mill would have been in trouble if Rick Ross hadn’t paid up, Cannon confirmed that it was indeed the case. He clarified that Mill didn’t owe anything, but they took the money anyway, insisting it wasn’t extortion but rather a business deal.
Meek Mill’s recent X posts about Nipsey Hussle and Rick Ross’ namesake story
Luce Cannon mentioned that the situation led to a stronger bond between Meek Mill and Nipsey Hussle, who was also part of the Rollin’ 60s crew. He suggested this happened years ago and explained that Mill and Nipsey grew closer because they began working with the same PR team. Speaking to Akademiks, Cannon said:
"Meek got smart and started hitting Nipsey up, and that’s why the Big U feud kept going with Nipsey."
Mentioning the late Nipsey in one of his recent X posts, Mill wrote:
“It's a real world real la ni**as that respect the sh*t out me how I carry myself in an open arms wya to build my people up ion care where you from... that's why you seen my around NIPSEY and others ... men of respect and honor!”
In another X post on March 26, 2025, Meek Mill shared that he, Nipsey, YG, Mustard, and others worked to avoid the East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry. He emphasized that he turned his life around through blessings but has always been willing to confront so-called tough guys in isolated areas without bystanders to test their courage.
Rick Ross shared an anecdote with People Magazine in 2023. It was when he first arranged a flight for Meek Mill after meeting him in Philadelphia. He asked his sister, Renee, to book a flight for the young artist. After receiving Mill’s full name, Ross sent the details back to his sister.
However, she kept calling him, insisting he had sent the wrong information because it appeared as though he was repeatedly sending his name. Confused, Rick Ross double-checked and realized that Mill’s real name, Robert Williams, was nearly identical to his own, William Roberts.
