Cynthia Erivo announced as host of the 2025 Tony Awards

Broadway’s biggest night has found its new host. Cynthia Erivo, a Tony Award winner singer, and actor has been announced as the host of the 78th Annual Tony Awards.

The ceremony is set to take place on Sunday, June 8, 2025. It will be held at New York City's Radio City Music Hall and air live on CBS while streaming on Paramount+. This marks the first time Erivo will take on the role of emcee for the event.

Per Deadline, Wicked actor Cynthia Erivo shared in a statement,

"I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor. I am looking forward to ushering the theatre community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion."

The announcement was made by The American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, the organizations behind the Tony Awards. Heather Hitchens, THE President and CEO of the American Theater Wing, along with Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League, praised Erivo for her contributions to musical theatre. Here is what they noted,

“Through performances on both stage and screen, Cynthia has extended the magic of musical theater to millions of new fans around the globe — and that is exactly the mission of the Tony Awards."

They also added,

"Her talent defies gravity and boundaries, and we are beyond thrilled to welcome her home to Broadway for what will be a joyful and inspiring celebration of the theatrical artform. We hope audiences are ready to leap to their feet, cry tears of joy, and maybe even get up and dance”

From Tony winner to host

Cynthia Erivo won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in 2016 for her role as Celie in The Color Purple. Her performance was met with widespread recognition from fans and enthusiasts.

It led to a Grammy win for Best Musical Theater Album and a Daytime Emmy for her work on the televised production. This placed her on the brink of EGOT status, which consists of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. She is yet to win an Oscar.

Most recently, she took on the role of Elphaba in Wicked: Part One, the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. Released in late 2024, the film became the highest-grossing movie adapted from a Broadway production.

Moreover, Cynthia Erivo will also headline Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl in August 2025 and is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone.
