Reports indicate that the probe started after an incident at a Centennial childcare center in September 2024. Vigil, who had worked at the center since February 2024, was terminated on September 6 after a teacher's aide raised concerns. The aide, filling in for another teacher, allegedly saw the Colorado daycare worker behaving aggressively on September 5.

The aide alleged that he was tossing sleeping pads across the room and seemed visibly agitated when children were blocking his path. Sensing the possible danger of the situation, she immediately reported the incident to the daycare director and police.

After receiving the report, investigators examined surveillance tapes from the daycare. What they found, raised further questions about Vigil's behavior. The tapes supposedly showed many incidents of abusive and degrading behaviour towards children. Consequently, law enforcement secured an arrest warrant for Vigil, and he surrendered.

The Colorado officials revealed:

“Investigators began reviewing evidence from the daycare and discovered many instances of harmful, degrading, and humiliating actions directed at the children, all two years old."

The former Colorado preschool teacher has a total of 51 charges against him. These include nine counts of child abuse knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury. Nineteen charges of child abuse knowingly or recklessly without harm and twenty-three charges of harassment by striking, shoving, or kicking.

At the time of writing, police officials are yet to release the name of the daycare where Vigil worked. The 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office has indicated that the court case affidavit is still under suppression.

The investigation continues, with law enforcement working in partnership with state licensing authorities, social workers, and other authorities. The sheriff's office encourages anyone who might have additional information regarding the reported incidents, or knows other possible victims, to come forward and help with the investigation.

Such cases highlight the need for strict monitoring in childcare settings. The charges against Vigil remind us of the necessity of rigorous background checks, and ongoing monitoring of caregivers to avoid such tragedies.

Law enforcement agencies are stressing the importance of reporting any suspicions of child abuse, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of children in schools and childcare facilities.
