In early April 2025, a TikTok video claimed Alex Cooper had her assistant legally change her identity since she shared her first name with Matt Kaplan's ex-wife, Claire Holt. The tale was popular on Instagram gossip sites and was re-shared on sites such as Threads, creating a viral sensation despite lacking supporting evidence.

Matt Kaplan, a producer of movies and television series with credits including To All the Boys I've Loved Before, was married to actress Claire Holt from April 2016 until their divorce in 2017. The foundation of the claim seems unreasonable since Holt is not involved in Cooper's business life and has been married to Andrew Joblon since 2018.

When asked about the "craziest rumor" she has ever heard on Harry Jowsey's Boyfriend Material podcast, which aired on April 22, Alex Cooper used this name-change event as a case study, and swiftly dismissed it.

"Obviously that's not true,"

She replied flatly, noting that when she first saw it online, she

"didn't even bat an eyelash."

The tale was absurd, but Cooper was disappointed that her assistant, a private individual, found it offensive. She underscored her concern about the person being dragged into the rumor, saying:

“What’s sad, I think, is that the assistant is a very private person and she was like so upset about it.”

Alex Cooper further said,

“When those types of things happen, I feel like I’m just scrolling. You see it, you keep scrolling. Another day, another rumor”

Cooper and Kaplan began dating after meeting at a Zoom conference in July 2020. After their March 2023 engagement, their beachside wedding in Riviera Maya, Mexico, was on April 6, 2024. Attendants were only close relatives and friends, their dogs included.

When they co-founded the Unwell Network, a media platform supporting businesses in the lifestyle and pop-culture sectors, the couple's entrepreneurial drive was on full show.

On social media, fans mostly backed Cooper, praising her for facing falsehoods directly and expressing concern for her staff member.

Some detractors took advantage of the event to express worries about the larger consequences of rumor culture on private people working in the entertainment sector.

By quickly and categorically denying the allegation that she had her assistant alter her name because of Matt Kaplan's ex-wife, Alex Cooper showed discipline in managing internet rumors. She also showed sympathy for individuals who are wrongly accused.

On the Boyfriend Material podcast, Cooper formally denied the charge, thereby addressing curiosity and drawing attention to the human toll of baseless claims. He told the crowd that behind every viral narrative are actual individuals and that their emotions matter.
