Fans of Ubisoft's free-to-play arena shooter XDefiant were astonished when the company officially announced that the servers would be shut down on June 3, 2025. The game, which promised to combine classic arcade-style combat with modern free-to-play ideas, was highly anticipated before its release on May 21, 2024. Although the game achieved remarkable player milestones, it was unable to sustain its original popularity.

The X.com handle of GoGo posted an update of the game, captioning it:

"RIP XDefiant. Really gonna miss this silly little shooter. It was far from perfect, but it did so much right. The best arena shooter of the generation, for my money. One last session tonight before servers go offline."

Fans and industry experts alike are sad about the game's closing on June 3, 2025. At first, it seemed like a good idea to mix old-school arcade shooting games with new free-to-play games. But in a highly competitive market, it quickly proved impossible to keep going. Even though the game had a great launch and had more than 15 million players by the end of 2024, it had trouble keeping its core audience and didn't meet Ubisoft's internal profitability standards.
