Open AI’s Chat GPT has been in the news lately for unveiling the new image generation feature, Studio Ghibli style. The new feature has sparked a debate on social media. While many have raised concerns about AI taking over art, others have supported AI and praised its capabilities. The debate has ushered a new slop trend (slop being a term used to describe poor AI writing and images).
Joining the debate is popular Twitch streamer, xQc, who has shared his review about AI art during his livestream. xQc claimed that AI art was better than those made by artists. He said:
“Why do you call everything ‘slop’ these days? I gotta be honest with you, I feel like ‘slop’ is becoming a buzzword to discredit anything. A lot of AI art coming out is literally better than most artists’ best work.”
While showcasing his support for the new Studio Ghibli style feature, xQc went on to say that he was the consumer of the final product and not the process. In his words:
“If something does better by itself than an artist can do in their entire life, brother, I gotta be honest with you, I don’t give a sh*t. It’s just better. I don’t care. Why would I care? I don’t consume the method, I consume the product. If this gives me a better product, I have to give credit where credit is due.”
Netizens give mixed reactions to xQc’s remark in support of AI art and Studio Ghibli style
Many internet users came forward and gave their reaction to xQc’s remark on Studio Ghibli style and AI art. While some seemed worried about the future of artists, others said AI can never replace human talent.
“Serious question. Do people like this realize AI can also replace them? What they offer is nothing more than a product,” an X user commented.
““Artists” need to get better if AI can put them out of a job,” wrote another X user.
“I mean its true its gonna be tough road for artists,” stated another user on X.
Some said that convenience would be the decider at the end of the day, while others supported Hayao Miyazaki, the animator and creator of Studio Ghibli style.
“We can never ever replace real people with AI,” a netizen stated.
“I think it's fun to make stuff with AI but you can't replace OGs like Toriyama and Miyazaki,” another X user remarked.
“It's true. Convenience wins at the end of the day with human commerce. Always has. Many horse wranglers and carriage makers went out of business when cars got more popular. Blockbuster and Hollywood Video went out of business when Netflix blew up,” commented an X user.
More about Studio Ghibli style
On March 26, 2025, OpenAI introduced a novel image-generation function for ChatGPT, termed Studio Ghibli style. The style is renowned in the Japanese anime field and has expanded into several media genres including short films, commercials, and television movies.
The Studio Ghibli style in Chat GPT preserves the lettering, elements, and other features akin to the original image. The generated image resembles those found in Japanese anime such as Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and One Piece.
