Michelle Obama absent from Barack’s family outing with daughters amid split rumors: What we know

Barack Obama had a family outing with daughters Malia and Sasha on April 25, and, as per a Page Six report, his wife, Michelle Obama, did not join them admist ongoing divorce rumors.

The divorce rumors started after Michelle's absence from several high-profile events. In January 2025, she skipped Donald Trump’s second inauguration, which Barack Obama attended. She was also absent from the 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

These absences made tabloids and the social media question the state of the Obama marriage. However, Michelle Obama recently opened up about their divorce rumors and indicated why she was not present at the high-profile events, during the Work in Progress Podcast by Sophia Bush, on April 9. She said:

"The interesting thing is that when I say ‘no,’ for the most part, people are like, ‘I get it,’ and I’m OK'"

She continued:

"And that’s the thing that we as women struggle with — disappointing people. So much so that people, they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing."

The reason behind Michelle not joining her family for the outing is not yet confirmed. Michelle’s absence could simply be due to scheduling conflicts or her focus on personal projects.

Michelle Obama reveals why she didn't attend Donald Trump's inauguration

On the latest episode of IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, uploaded on April 23, with guest Taraji P. Henson, Michelle revealed the reason why she did not attend Donald Trump's second presidential inauguration. She said:

"It started with not having anything to wear. I mean, I had it affirmatively because I'm always prepared for any funeral or anything. I walk around with the right dress; I travel with clothes just in case something pops off. So I was like, if I'm not going to do this thing, I've got to tell my team I don't even want to have a dress ready."

Barack Obama also included Michelle in a joint statement and heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis on Instagram, writing:

"Today, Michelle and I mourn with everyone around the world – Catholic and non-Catholic alike – who drew strength and inspiration from the Pope’s example. May we continue to heed his call to “never remain on the sidelines of this march of living hope."

Despite the rumors, both Michelle and Barack Obama have reportedly made it clear that their marriage is going strong.

Barack Obama married Michelle Obama in 1992. The couple shares two daughters, Malia Ann Obama and Sasha Obama.
