The use of AI technology to mimic Studio Ghibli-style photos became a viral trend on social media. Sam had previously taken to his X on March 30 to ask users to "chill" using the image generator feature and added that his "team needs sleep." While ChatGPT has put restrictions on image generation, the use of AI in replicating human art and creativity has drawn mixed attention.

Corpora AI's CEO, Mel Morris, has also weighed in on the discourse surrounding AI use for content creation. In an exclusive conversation with Dexerto on April 4, Morris revealed the impact of AI use and the strain on "GPU systems." He also discussed the financial implications and noted:

“From a point of view of the economics of it, it looks great! We’ve had millions of people start using this thing here. Bad news is — let’s not talk about how much it’s costing us, because we’re absolutely [spending] a fortune and probably losing lots of money servicing that demand."

The use of AI in creating Studio Ghibli-inspired images has caught the attention of many content creators. The trend quickly took over the internet, with many celebrating images alongside their loved ones. In his conversation with Dexerto, Morris noted the positive experience of users engaging with the trend and said it created “momentum very quickly.” However, he emphasized the amount of load the trend places on GPUs and added:

"I had a phone conversation just last night about this and someone said, ‘Yeah, these guys are burning through GPUs doing this. Literally, they’re burning through GPUs, they’re almost catching fire.’"

Morris also elaborated on the effects of AI and its potential future. He described how the unmonitored use of AI can create a “mockery of things.” He noted the possibility of the emergence of "fake videos" and added:

"One extreme is this could bring about very, very bad circumstances, real-world issues upon us.”

It is unclear if Studio Ghibli will take legal action in response to the raging social media trend. Previously, a counterfeit statement circulated on social media claiming that Studio Ghibli had reportedly sent a "cease and desist letter" to an AI app, Gib Studio. Official information from Studio Ghibli is yet to be released. However, the founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, has vehemently opposed the use of technology to create art.

Corpora AI's CEO Mel Morris’s views on the use of AI come after social media trends involving ChatGPT went viral. However, it left many worried, including AI professionals. The trend has drawn significant negative attention from Ghibli artists, with Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Goro, noting that traditional art forms can never be “replaced.”
