Rapper Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, remains confident as he faces serious federal charges. In a recent phone call during DJ Akademiks’ livestream, Durk sounded focused and positive.

“I’ve been good, man,” he said. “Mentally, spiritually, I’ve been on top of my shit. I’ll be back out there, you hear me.”

Lil Durk is currently in jail awaiting trial for a murder-for-hire case. Prosecutors claim he was involved in planning an attack on another rapper. Despite the accusations, Durk says he is using his time in jail to focus on growth and learning. He shared that he is spending time learning Arabic and staying connected to his family and faith.

The rapper’s trial is set for October. But his legal team is working to get him out on bail. A hearing to review his detention is scheduled for May 8.

Lil Durk is accused of plotting to shoot rapper Quando Rondo. Prosecutors allege he was the main organizer of the crime. Prosecutors are also citing his song lyrics against him in court. One such song cited is "Wonderful Wayne & Jackie Boy" by Babyface Ray, where Durk is featured.

Some of the lyrics in that song indicate participation in violent activity, the government says. But Durk's attorneys contend that the song was composed several months prior to the crime's occurrence. The lyrics are unrelated to the case and are being misconstrued, they argue.

The citing of lyrics in court proceedings is now common. It's unfair, say some, since lyrics are usually fictional or hyperbolic. Durk's side thinks the prosecutors are abusing the lyrics to construct a weak case without factual evidence.

What is Lil Durk doing in jail?

During his phone call with DJ Akademiks, Lil Durk explained how he is spending his time behind bars. He said he is working on himself, both mentally and spiritually.

“I’ve just been focused on life, my family and stuff like that,” he said.

He also shared that he is learning Arabic while in jail.

“It’s a couple of guys in here that know how to speak Arabic fluently. So I’m just learning the different words and tightening up my Arabic. Just getting my knowledge together,” he said.

Durk did not mention the charges directly. Rather, he emphasized the importance of being strong and remaining hopeful. His message indicated that he wishes to utilize this period in a good manner, despite being in a tough situation.

Lil Durk's attorneys have moved to dismiss the charges. According to them, the grand jury was misled by the government. In a court filing, they stated that the government's assertions made in the indictment were misleading or false. They think that the case must be dismissed due to it.

They also presented a revised bail offer to the court. It consists of $1 million cash, $900,000 in property, and $150,000 from a friend. The package further consists of electronic monitoring and 24/7 private security. All this is to demonstrate that Durk is not a flight risk and will obey the laws if released.

The court will consider this proposal in the hearing on May 8. That will determine if Durk could wait for his trial outside of prison. If the judge approves the bail conditions, Durk can be released on strict conditions pending his October trial.
