Pope Francis, the first Jesuit to lead the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced his death.
He breathed his last at his residence at Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City at 7:35 AM local. Pope Francis was 88 years old and was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in February 2025 as he was suffering from bronchitis.
As per Vatican News, the official confirmation of his death took place in the chapel, not in the room where he actually passed away, following special Vatican traditions that honor the dignity of the papacy. Afterward, his body was immediately placed into the coffin.
How old was Pope Francis? Details explored
Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on the morning of Easter Monday as he was suffering from respiratory tract infections and double pneumonia. He was admitted to the Gemelli hospital in Rome, Italy, on February 14, and then a few days later was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.
Although his condition did start to get better, it eventually deteriorated. He was the 266th Supreme Pontiff and was elected back in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Announcing his death, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber said:
''Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.''
Pope Francis was not doing his best in terms of health in recent years.
Back in his 20s, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who later became Pope Francis, had undergone surgery to remove a portion of his lung that was affected due to a respiratory infection.
As he aged, the frequency of illness increased, and in 2023, he had to cancel his trip to the United Arab Emirates due to lung inflammation.
Pope Francis will be remembered for his humility, as he leaves behind a legacy that forever changed the heart of the Catholic Church.
