A recent ChatGPT update has created a trend of Studio Ghibli-styled images. The new trend began after OpenAI launched the GPT-40 on March 25, 2025, and users discovered they could prompt artwork reminiscent of the Japanese animation, Studio Ghibli.
The Internet is being flooded with recreations of iconic memes and movie stills that appear hand-drawn with muted color palettes and imaginative backgrounds. However, not all ChatPGT users have access to this unique feature.
Ghibli-style portraits are only available to Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Luckily, you can still join the Ghibli-style trend with the free version of other apps like Gemini, Craiyon, Artbreeder, and Grok.
How to create Ghibli-styled images for free
1) Visit Gemini or Grok websites or log into the apps.
2) Begin a fresh chat.
3) Type in your prompt, and don’t forget to add “in Ghibli style” for any image you wish to create.
4) Download.
An example of a prompt for generating Ghibli-styled images on Gemini and Grok is: “Generate an image of a puppy playing in the grass in Studio Ghibli style.”
You could also upload your photograph and prompt the AI app to convert it to Ghibli-style images. Upload your image and type prompts like “portrait in Studio Ghibli style, sunny morning, bright colors.” Note that the output of different technologies varies.
While ChatGPT’s images might be photorealistic, Grok, Grok, or other platforms might produce more abstract results. You might need different takes to completely understand the whole process.

More details on the GPT-40 update by OpenAI
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, introduced the latest update on X on March 25, 2025. According to Altman, the new update enhances creativity and intellectual freedom. He also advised users to be wary of creating offensive art and promised to monitor the product and listen to user inputs:
"It's an incredible technology/product. I remember seeing some of the first images come out of this model and having a hard time. They were really made by AI. We think people will love it, and we are excited to see the resulting creativity,"
He added:
"People are going to create some really amazing stuff and some stuff that may offend people; what we'd like to aim for is that the tool doesn't create offensive stuff unless you want it to."
