Former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter has described Meghan Markle as “The Undine Spragg of Montecito.” In a Rorschach Test conducted by Interview Magazine on March 27, 2025, Carter shared his opinion on the Duchess of Sussex.
For those unversed, Undine Spragg is a character in Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel The Customs of the Country. In the novel, Undine attempts to work her way into the high society of Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Carter seemingly draws a parallel between Markle’s transition from actor to Duchess and the fictional character’s story. His reference to Montecito stems from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relocation from London to their Montecito estate in California.
The seasoned publisher and journalist did not elaborate on his description of Markle.
Graydon Carter's previous comments on Meghan Markle explored
Prior to his March 27, 2025, comment on Meghan Markle, Graydon Carter had spoken about her and Prince Harry’s relocation to California. In a 2023 interview with The Telegraph, the Air Mail founder described the couple’s new location as "God’s waiting room" and a "lonely, beautiful place":
"Montecito is gorgeous, but it's God's waiting room: there is nothing, nothing, nothing to do. It's a 40-minute drive from LA. There can't be many kids there because young families can't afford it. It's a lonely, beautiful place,"
Graydon added that his first reaction upon reading about the couple’s relocation was that they had made a wrong move:
'When I first read about it, I thought, "That doesn't look right." They have too much attention. For people like that, unavailability is your greatest asset. If you're out there too much, the public has a chance to get sick of you. I think they've made every wrong move you can make.”
In 2025, Page Six published an exclusive in which Graydon Carter discussed Markle’s 2017 Vanity Fair cover story, which was published while he was still editor. The 75-year-old recalled that Markle challenged the interviewer for only asking questions about Harry rather than her charity work. He quoted the Suits star as saying:
"Excuse me, Is this going to all be about Prince Harry? Because I thought we were going to be talking about my charities and my philanthropy.”
Carter remarked that Markle was “slightly adrift on the facts and reality.”
The former Vanity Fair editor also suggested that if the late Princess Diana were alive, she would have been unhappy with Harry and Meghan’s decision to resign from their royal duties:
“I would think she would feel great sorrow for her son to have been pulled away from his family like this, especially his brother but also his father,” he said. “Anytime someone comes between siblings, that’s a disaster, horrible for a family.”
Meghan Markle has not responded to Graydon Carter's remarks about her.
