On May 12, a three-year-old boy was found unconscious in a backyard swimming pool near Gilbert and Riggs roads. As per a statement received by Fox News:
"Chandler PD arrived on scene first and found an unconscious 3-year-old boy that was pulled from the backyard pool. Officers began CPR and firefighters took over patient care upon arrival."
The 3-year-old boy was first taken to Chandler Regional Hospital. Later, he was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he is reported to be still in serious condition.
The Chandler Police Department is trying to find out how the child got into the pool. The Chandler Fire Department has not provided any information about whether there was a fence or barrier around the pool to prevent access. The investigation is still going on.
According to a 2024 report by the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1-4. Additionally, in the same report, the CDC states Arizona recorded 1.42 unintentional drownings every year per 100,000 people between 2018-2021.
Furthermore, the Drowning Coalition of Arizona recorded 79 near-drowning and drowning accidents in 2024 in Phoenix Valley. Out of the 79 incidents, 21 were fatal.
